New Peugeot 5008 SUV: prices, specs and release date

Peugeot 5008 morphs from MPV to seven-seat SUV and starts at £24,495

Pricing has been announced for the Peugeot 5008, a new seven-seat car that'll be available to order from mid-October, replacing the 5008 people carrier and switching to the popular SUV format as it does so.

The 5008 follows in the footsteps of the Peugeot 3008, a stylish SUV that took home Carbuyer’s 2017 Car of the Year award. Like the 3008, the 5008 features a standout interior, comes with digital dashboard dials as standard, and is available with a range of modern petrol and diesel engines.

Unlike the 3008, however, the 5008 is equipped with seven seats, thanks partly to the fact it’s around 19cm longer than its smaller sibling.

Peugeot 5008: trim levels

Peugeot is offering the 5008 in four trim levels: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. All models come with seven seats as standard.

Active cars come with digital dashboard dials, rear parking sensors, a DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, a few bits of exterior chrome, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.

Allure costs around £1,800 extra and adds tinted rear windows, all-round parking sensors, power-fold wing mirrors, a reversing camera, tray tables on the back of the front seats, sat nav, voice recognition, 18-inch alloys and part synthetic leather, part cloth seats. You also get some extra safety kit with Allure trim, including a fatigue sensor for the driver, auto-dipping headlights, a blind spot warning system and lane keeping assistance, meaning the 5008 will take corrective action if it detects you straying from your lane without indicating.

GT Line costs a further £1,900 or so and includes full LED headlights, a subtle bodykit, wireless phone charging and a wide-ranging series of interior trim improvements, including upgraded seat upholstery.

The top-spec GT car gets adaptive cruise control, 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and go, a foot-operated powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof and Nappa leather seats, with a massaging function for the driver. Note that the GT model comes exclusively with the 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine so is rather expensive at £35,695.

Engines, performance and economy

Entry-level 5008s come with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 128bhp and paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox. If you want the car to be quicker and prefer petrol power, there’s also a 163bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, and this comes exclusively with an automatic gearbox.

Those after a diesel engine have more choice, with 99bhp and 118bhp versions of Peugeot’s 1.6-litre Blue HDi engine, and a 2.0-litre Blue HDi diesel, available with 148 or 178bhp. An automatic gearbox is optional with the 118bhp diesel and standard with the 178bhp 2.0-litre engine.

That’s a decent amount of choice but there are a couple of things to be aware of if you’re interested in the 5008: the 118bhp 1.6-litre Blue HDi will be replaced with a newer 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel towards the end of the year if you go for a manual gearbox, though if you want a similarly powerful diesel and an automatic gearbox, you’ll still be able to buy the 118bhp 1.6-litre engine after this point.

Secondly, note that the range-topping 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox as standard, though this is being replaced with a new eight-speed automatic from February 2018.

None of the 5008 models will be hugely quick, though the flipside is none should be particularly expensive to run either. 0-62mph takes as long as 13.6 seconds if you choose the 99bhp 1.6-litre diesel, while this time shrinks to 9.1 seconds if you choose the fastest engine, the 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel.

The 99bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine is the most efficient, with official economy of 65.7mpg, while the 163bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine is pegged at 48.7mpg.

While Peugeot isn’t offering a four-wheel drive version of the 5008, all models are available with ‘Grip Control’ as an option. This adds normal, snow, mud and sand modes to the traction control system, giving the 5008 some of the ability of a four-wheel-drive SUV.

Interior

The 5008 has a contemporary interior, with the next generation of Peugeot’s ‘i-Cockpit’ layout. The first iteration of ‘i-Cockpit’ featured a small steering wheel that you looked over to see instruments mounted on top of the dashboard. While the new system is similar, the analogue dials have been fully replaced by a 12.3-inch digital screen, which can be individually configured and displays information like your speed, fuel level and range to empty, as well as navigation prompts.

A second screen sits on top of the dashboard and provides touchscreen infotainment, including climate control, media and sat nav, thereby reducing the number of buttons needed. The 5008’s centre console is particularly driver-focused, with a chrome surround partly separating you and your passenger for a cocoon-like driving position. More chrome trim surrounds pieces of the interior, including the four dashboard air vents. Also introduced with the 5008 will be i-Cockpit Amplify – an option unless you go for the expensive GT Line or GT trim levels. It allows adjustment of the screen background colours and ambient lighting, along with a seat massage function and fragrance diffuser. The last of these works in conjunction with the air-conditioning and comes in Cosmic Cuir, Aerodrive and Harmony Wood, each with a characterful scent.

Practicality

Peugeot says the long wheelbase of the 5008 will make it one of the most practical SUVs in its class. Not only will it have seven seats, but the second row will also consist of three separate chairs that can adjust and fold individually or accommodate a child seat. When you don’t need the third-row seats, they stow flat in the boot floor.

There’s an impressive 780 litres of luggage space with five seats in place, which increases to 1,125 litres up to the windowline with all rear seats folded flat, or a huge 1,940 litres up to the roof. There’s also 39 litres of cubby storage inside the cabin.

Optional electric bike

To help them stand out from the SUV crowd, both the 5008 and smaller Peugeot 3008 will be available with an optional ‘personal mobility device’ stowed in the boot. The eKick electric bike and e-Bike eF01 electrically assisted bicycle have been developed with scooter brand MICRO. Once in the car, they’re charged in their docking station, ready for when you need them. Peugeot expects them to be especially handy for people who park in the city and need a quick way to get around.

Price & on-sale date

Order books open in mid-October and the Peugeot 5008 will be priced from £24,495. The range tops out with the 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine and GT trim at £35,695, while a mid-spec 5008 Allure fitted with the 118bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine is £28,125.
