Honda Civic review - Practicality & boot space

"There’s more space inside than found in previous Civics, and the boot is a good size"

Practicality & boot space Rating

4.0 out of 5

The latest version of the Honda Civic is longer than the previous one, and the distance between the front and rear wheels (known as the wheelbase) is greater as well. This makes it a roomy choice for a family hatchback, but with so many similarly-priced crossovers now flooding the market, it could come up short when cross-shopping a Nissan Qashqai, for instance. A tow bar can be specified on the Civic for around £1,300, although with a towing capacity of just 750kg, it’s not the most accomplished car for the job.

Honda Civic interior space & storage

A lengthened wheelbase means there’s more space inside, so legroom in the back is generous. The roof is actually lower than before, but we reckon headroom inside is still acceptable. If you’re used to an SUV, though, the Civic’s low roofline could take some adjustment, especially when putting a child in a car seat.

Boot space

The boot is 410 litres, which is more than the 380 litres you get in a Volkswagen Golf and a lot more than the 313 litres in a 2.0-litre Toyota Corolla hatchback. This means the Civic is one of the more practical models in its class, although the Skoda Octavia is still the king here – it has 590 litres of luggage space.

With the rear seats folded, the boot increases to 1,220 litres, which is about on par with many of its rivals – though the step in the floor could prove annoying. It’s a useful car and should have more than enough space for most families, plus there are some handy features such as two USB ports for the back seats.
