The new Audi A6 saloon has finally landed, and costs from just over £50k

The Audi A6 saloon has finally landed to take on its longstanding executive saloon rivals, the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. Until now, the A6 Avant estate was the sole bodystyle of the most recent A6 available in showrooms, but the arrival of the saloon means the lineup is now looking more comprehensive.

The A6 saloon has been designed to be a little more conservatively styled than the Audi A6 Avant, though its shape is very streamlined and produces very little drag, which should help with fuel economy. For context, its low drag coefficient is on par with models like the Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID.7 – two of the class-leaders by this metric.

Up front, the Audi A6 saloon gets the brand’s trademark large and dominating grille, while the rear end’s curved bootlid takes inspiration from the Audi A6 of the late 1990s. Unlike the old car, though, the new A6 saloon gets an integrated ducktail rear spoiler to improve aerodynamic stability and provide a sportier look.

What engines are available on the Audi A6 saloon?

Like the Avant, the saloon launches with petrol and diesel engines that are 2.0 litres in capacity and come with mild-hybrid assistance – both of these produce 201bhp, with the petrol coming with front-wheel drive and the diesel with quattro all-wheel drive for added traction.

The petrol TFSI engine should be able to return around 40mpg, with the TDI diesel engine capable of over 60mpg. The mild-hybrid system fitted in the diesel car is a little more advanced than that of the petrol, so it’s able to drive at very low speeds on electric power alone. That’s useful in a diesel engine because they’re more efficient at higher motorway speeds on longer journeys, so in slow, stop-start traffic in urban environments, the electric assistance can take up some of the slack.

While not yet available from launch, a set of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will arrive in due course, and so will the performance-focused variant, the Audi S6. There’s already a saloon version of the A6 e-tron EV, though that car is actually based on very different underpinnings to the combustion-engined A6.

Like with the Avant estate, the A6 saloon gets a tech-laden interior, with a large panel comprising Audi’s digital gauge cluster and 14.5-inch infotainment screen that dominates the dash. 

The A6 saloon will also be sold in various trims from launch: Sport, S Line and Edition 1, as well as special Launch Edition and Launch Edition Plus versions with 21-inch wheels, air suspension and four-wheel steering among other extra niceties. The Audi A6 saloon starts from £50,560, while the Launch Edition and Launch Edition Plus cost £65,830 and £67,780, respectively. 

While the PHEVs are not yet available, you can expect these to breach that top figure when they launch in autumn 2025, while the S6 will certainly be a lot more expensive once it arrives. The Audi A6 petrol and diesel mild hybrids are currently available to order, with deliveries starting in summer 2025.
