Best insurance group 2 cars
Read our list of the best cars in insurance group two to find out which cars could save you money on your next annual premium
The costs of owning a car can quickly add up, with car insurance one of the most daunting bills to pay, particularly for young and newly qualified drivers. There are various methods to lower your car insurance, from choosing a black box policy to reducing your annual mileage, but buying a car in a low insurance group is a reliable way to cut costs.
Insurers categorise cars in groups from one to 50, with 50 being the most expensive to insure. This list covers the new cars found in group two, which should provide buyers with some of the lowest insurance premiums available.
As well as the cars in insurance group two, we have also covered insurance groups one, three and four, so be sure to read those lists for the full picture of cheap-to-insure cars. While all these cars are hatchbacks, our top 10 list of the best cheap-to-insure cars covers a wider range of different body styles in low insurance groups, from small cars to SUVs.
Currently, the only new car that falls into insurance group two is the Kia Picanto. Starting from £13,695, the Picanto is one of our favourite city cars, with excellent interior space and equipment for its budget-friendly price.
While the cheapest Picanto actually sits in insurance group five, it's the £16,300 ‘GT Line’ model with the automatic gearbox that falls into group two. This high-spec model comes kitted with plenty of extra features, including 16-inch alloy wheels and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
We prefer the manual gearbox over the automatic, the latter stretching the 0-60mph time to a lethargic 16.6 seconds, but for the cheapest possible insurance, the auto is the one to go for. If you don’t need the added kit that comes with the ‘GT Line’ model, you can opt for the cheaper ‘2’ model, which handily drops the Picanto into insurance group one.
