New Cupra Leon V1 manual starts from £29,515

Cupra’s hatchback gets two new entry-level powertrains and one is available with a six-speed manual transmission

  • Base-spec ‘V1’ model introduced
  • On sale now from £29,515

The Cupra Leon hatchback’s engine lineup has been expanded to include two new entry-level powertrains – one with the option for a six-speed manual gearbox. The Spanish brand has also introduced a new base ‘V1’ trim level to the range, which includes a 1.5-litre petrol variant that’s available to order now.

Choosing the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is the most affordable way into the Cupra Leon lineup, with prices starting from £29,515 for the manual version. This engine produces 148bhp and gets the Leon from 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds; the DSG automatic gearbox makes it 0.2 seconds faster.

Despite lacking any hybrid assistance, the entry-level powertrain is one of the most economical in the range; Cupra claims the 1.5-litre engine will return up to 47.9mpg on the combined WLTP test cycle.

Those looking for a bit more power can instead opt for the new 2.0-litre TSI engine with 187bhp; this should be able to cut the sprint from 0-62mph to just under seven seconds, with only a small hit to fuel economy. However, unlike the 1.5-litre powertrain, this is only available with the DSG automatic and pricing is yet to be announced.

Of course, buyers can still choose from the existing range of Cupra Leon engines that include two higher-powered 2.0-litre TSI variants, as well as a pair of plug-in hybrids, which boast up to  242bhp and 37 miles of pure-electric range.

Alongside the two new engine choices, Cupra has also introduced a new base-spec trim level. Despite being the entry point into the Leon range, the ‘V1’ model still comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, sport seats, tri-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, keyless entry and start and twin exhaust pipes.

What does this mean for car buyers?

The Cupra Leon is a fantastic sporty hatchback and the new additions to the engine range should expand the car’s appeal to those who love its looks, but don’t quite need the extra power of higher-spec cars. A 1.5-litre Cupra Leon costs around £2,000 more than an entry-level SEAT Leon with the same engine; considering the amount of extra equipment you get, we think the price hike is justified.
