New Ford Capri teased ahead of July reveal – but it’s not a sports car
Ford Capri is the latest nameplate to be revived as an electric SUV – here’s what we know so far
- New electric coupe-SUV
- Based on the Ford Explorer
- Full reveal on 10th July
It’s confirmed – the Ford Capri is returning this year, but don’t get your hopes up for a new two-door coupe. Following the trend set by the Ford Puma and Mustang Mach-E, the new Capri will be revived as an SUV this time around, available exclusively as an EV. Fans of the iconic sports car from the 70s and 80s may be disappointed, but if the sales figures of the Puma are anything to go by, the new Capri could prove to be a big seller when it launches here later this year.
What do we know so far about the new Ford Capri?
A curious teaser advert titled ‘Comeback Cars’ has given us some clues about the upcoming Ford Capri. Hints such as “rewired” and “EV-ery time” provide confirmation that the new model will be electric, while mention of “1,986 classic coupes” is a reference to the final year of production of the original Capri. Further digging reveals that the new car will be revealed on 10th July this year.
A series of teaser pictures give us a glimpse of some of the Capri’s details up close. We have a clear view of the headlight and tail-light graphics, which include four distinct elements unlike any other Ford. There’s also a shot of the Capri from front on, with its raised SUV stance on display. We’ve put together an exclusive image suggesting the look of the new Capri in full, which previews a ‘fastback’ style SUV shape.
Unlike the original Capri, however, the new model will not be a low-slung sports car. Instead, it will be based on the new Ford Explorer but with coupe-SUV proportions, following the same approach used by the Skoda Enyaq Coupe, Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback and the Volkswagen ID.5. All of those models, including the Fords, are built around Volkswagen’s MEB electric car platform, so the Capri is likely to share their 52kWh and 77kWh batteries. We expect 168bhp single-motor and 335bhp dual-motor models to be offered as Ford currently does with the Explorer.
How much will the new Ford Capri cost?
We don’t know how much the Ford Capri will cost yet, but a starting price near £50,000 would be expected given that the Explorer starts from around £46,000. Further details will be revealed following the full unveiling of the Capri on 10th July.
