New Skoda Superb hatchback and estate: full details

Pricing and specifications have been announced for the new Skoda Superb estate. The new car costs around £1,200 more than the equivalent hatchback, but offers even more interior space.

Skoda says that with the rear seats folded, the new Skoda Superb estate has a boot measuring a vast 1,950 litres. That's some 345 litres more than a Ford Mondeo estate and 170 more than a Volkswagen Passat estate.

Like the Skoda Superb hatchback, the estate boasts a wide range of efficient engines and an impressive range of equipment fitted as standard. If you're waiting for a tax-free model, Skoda will unveil their ultra-efficient GreenLine model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Both the Skoda Superb hatchback and estate are now on sale, with the first deliveries expected in September. Residual values are already expected to be strong, according to a group of European vehicle data consortiums.

New Skoda Superb news

The new Skoda Superb is built on a lengthened version of the Volkswagen Group's MQB chassis (also used for the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and SEAT Leon), which it shares with the latest Volkswagen Passat saloon.

Skoda has stretched the Superb's wheelbase (the area between the front and rear wheels) by 80mm, which results in a noticeable expansion of the current version's already spacious interior.

The new Superb is around 75kg lighter than the previous model, which should improve ride comfort, handling and fuel consumption. Its aerodynamics have been tweaked, too, further enhancing efficiency.

New Skoda Superb equipment

The new Superb will be available in five trim levels; S, SE, SE Business, SE L Executive and top-spec Laurin & Klement (L&K).

Entry-level S models come with good standard equipment, including air-con, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED rear lights, a leather steering wheel, DAB digital radio, a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth phone connectivity.

SE models add to the basic spec with 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and cruise control. The Superb SE's Smartlink system allows you to have your phone's display on the car's screen and safely operate a range of apps on the move. SE models also feature a pair of umbrellas stored in the car's front doors.

SE Business trim models gain suede-like Alcantara upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, tinted windows and a touchscreen sat-nav system. The SE Business, as its name suggests, is aimed directly at company-car drivers and is available with 1.6-litre TDI 120PS or 2.0-litre TDI 150PS diesel engines. It starts from a P11D price of £22,735 and has a 19% BiK rating.

SE L Executive versions of the new Superb are very well equipped, boasting 18-inch alloy wheels, bright bi-xenon headlights, leather upholstery, heated front seats, sat-nav and a large eight-inch touchscreen. The SE L Executive also boasts 18-inch alloy wheels and an electrically-operated boot.

The Laurin & Klement flagship model offers a real touch of luxury, including upgraded cabin materials, a model-specific 18-inch alloy-wheel design, three-zone climate control, a Canton stereo, heated rear seats and several driver-assistance systems, such as lane-keeping and parking assistance.

A GreenLine model, which showcases the most efficient engine and couple of design tweaks, will make its world debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The GreenLine model will sit 15mm lower and feature a discreet rear spoiler to help with aerodynamics. These changes means the model creates less drag as it moves through the air, improving fuel efficiency.

New Skoda Superb styling

The sharper exterior styling of the new Skoda Superb is a departure from the conservative design of the previous car, while still retaining the tidy detailing characteristic of current Skoda models. It features a new headlamp arrangement and front grille, both of which can also be seen on the latest Skoda Octavia and Skoda Fabia.

The interior has been completely redesigned and benefits from being larger than that of the old model. There's 980mm of headroom, 157mm of rear legroom (twice as much as the Vauxhall Insignia) and a large 625-litre boot. Fold the rear seats down and luggage space increases to 1,760 litres. The boot can be opened simply by waving your foot under the rear bumper – a system Skoda calls Virtual Pedal. Similar systems are used on the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Kuga.

The controls all look logically laid-out, with a large sat nav on SE L Executive cars and a sharp, neat finish to the dashboard.

Storage spaces inside include front and rear door pockets that'll each hold a 1.5-litre bottle of water. There's also a tablet storage compartment in the front centre armrest, cup-holders that fit smaller bottles, storage nets on the inside edges of the front seats and a special compartment for storing hi-vis vests in each door. The boot offers cargo fasteners to keep things in place.

New Skoda Superb engines

The thirsty and slow-selling 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine has been dropped from the Superb range. There's still be plenty of choice for buyers, though, as a total of seven engines is available from launch, including four turbocharged petrols and three turbocharged diesels. Power outputs range from 118bhp from the 1.6-litre diesel up to 276bhp from the new 2.0-litre petrol. A 1.4-litre petrol engine will be fitted to the entry-level Superb.

These engines are expected to offer up to 30% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than the outgoing Superb range.

From 2016, there'll also be a 1.6-litre GreenLine diesel, which will be the first Skoda Superb to offer tax-exempt CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km. Skoda claims that this engine will be able to go 1,100 miles on a single tank of fuel, using their predicted fuel economy figure of up 76.4mpg.

Most of the engines will be available with front-wheel drive only, but selected models will be offered with Skoda's four-wheel-drive system, as well as an automatic DSG gearbox.

The estate's engine line-up will remain the same, although CO2 emissions will be marginally higher due to the fact it weighs a little more than the hatchback.

The Skoda Superb range is also expected to eventually include the company's first plug-in hybrid model, which could use the same petrol-electric hybrid engine as the Volkswagen Golf GTE. This offers strong performance, excellent fuel economy, extremely low CO2 emissions and the ability to travel 31 miles on battery power alone.

New Skoda Superb estate

Since its launch in 2009, the Skoda Superb estate has been a big seller for Skoda. In fact, this version counts for around 70% of UK Superb sales and 35% of worldwide sales.

From the front end to the rear doors, the Superb estate looks exactly like the Superb hatchback. The rear end features full LED tail-lights and a steeply raked window, along with a chunky bumper.

The new estate boasts a 660-litre boot – 27 litres bigger than what you get in the previous-generation model. Total usable space with the rear seats folded flat comes in at 1,950 litres, making the Superb Estate a class leader for boot space. The Mercedes E-Class, for example, has 60 litres less space in total.

The boot also crams in a lot of neat little touches. The rear seats can be folded down with the touch of just one button, while the boot floor is infinitely adjustable. Foldable dividers attach to the boot floor via Velcro and can prevent small items like single shopping bags from rolling around in the vast boot space. If you're having trouble seeing in the dark, there's a removable LED torch, which charges when in its slot and is magnetic, so it sticks to the body panels of the car. Under the rolling boot cover, there's a shallow load space for flat items - Skoda say something thin like a jacket can be folded and slid into the storage space.

Just like the Superb hatchback, the estate can be fitted with a hands-free tailgate, where you can open the boot just by waving your foor underneath the rear bumper.

New Skoda Superb release date

At the Geneva Motor Show in March, it was confirmed the new Skoda Superb hatchback will start at a very competitive £18,640, while the estate carries a £1,200 premium. UK deliveries begin in September.

Forecasts have already been made about the residual values of the new Superb. A jury of vehicle data organisations decided that the new Skoda Superb would hold onto more of its value on the used car market, compared to cars like the Ford Mondeo, Mazda6, Vauxhall Insignia and Peugeot 508. The version of the car may have varied when measuring the values in different European markets but the new Skoda always came out on top.
