Volkswagen reveals new Scirocco GTS
High-performance coupe unveiled at 2015 Shanghai Auto Show
Volkswagen has revealed details of the Volkswagen Scirocco GTS, a sporty version of its facelifted coupe, ahead of the car’s public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show.
The German manufacturer says the new car “marks the comeback of an icon”, inspired as it is by the 1982 model of the same name.
The GTS, which will be launched in Europe in May, shares many mechanical components with the brand’s iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchback, just like the first version did in the ‘80s.
The most notable similarity between the GTS and the Golf GTI is under the bonnet – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 217bhp. That’s enough power to get the Scirocco GTS from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 153mph.
Fuel economy is expected to come in at around 46mpg, while emissions stand at 142g/km, meaning the car will cost £145 per year to tax.
The GTS is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or Volkswagen’s DSG automatic gearbox, which you control using paddles behind the steering wheel.
You can tell the GTS apart from the standard Scirocco thanks to its new 18-inch alloy wheels, red painted brake callipers, and an ‘R-style’ bodykit and roof spoiler. Paint choices include ‘Deep Black’, ‘Urano Grey’ and ‘Flash Red’, and you can also opt for a GTS decal package that includes the stripes you can see on the car in our images.
Inside, occupants are treated to an interior that is dominated by black and red touches. The dashboard features piano black inserts and GTS badging, and the pedals are finished in aluminium. Red stitching can be found on the sports seats, sports steering wheel and floor mats. The iconic golf ball-style gearknob also makes an appearance, in a nod to other Volkswagen performance models.
The Scirocco GTS also features the latest version of Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment Matrix, which is much easier to upgrade with new tech and updated navigation information than its predecessor.
There is no confirmed pricing for the car in the UK yet but expect prices to be around £30,000.
The Scirocco GTS will officially launch in May in both Europe and China.
