New Skoda Octavia 2017 prices and specs revealed
2017 Skoda Octavia gets styling makeover, enhanced technology and increased connectivity; starts from £17,000
The revised 2017 Skoda Octavia hatchback and Skoda Octavia Estate are now available to order, costing from £17,055 to a range-topping £30,085, with little price difference over its predecessor.
As is typical of a mid-life facelift, there are some subtle styling differences at the nose and tail, along with updated in-car technology bringing better smartphone and internet integration. New driving assistance features should also make top-spec versions more relaxing and safer to drive.
Customers have plenty of choice, with six engines and S, SE, SE Technology, SE L and Laurin & Klement trim levels for the standard hatchback and estate, which are already available to order. There are also revisions for the high-performance Octavia vRS and rugged four-wheel-drive Octavia Scout.
The new Skoda Octavia is on sale now – read our review here.
New 2017 Skoda Octavia trim levels
Even Octavia S trim gets alloy wheels, LED rear light clusters, air-conditioning and smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard, along with a safety system that applies the brakes after a collision. All Octavias now also have an XDS electronic differential lock to improve cornering.
Step up to the SE trim and features like cruise control, rear parking sensors and a driver fatigue alert system are fitted, along with dual-zone climate control, front foglights and the option to change driving modes, affecting the steering, engine response and efficiency of the air-conditioning.
If you need sat nav, you’ll find Skoda’s Amundsen system in the SE Technology trim, which also gets adaptive cruise control and can provide wireless internet to multiple devices like smartphones and tablets.
SE L trim is even more upmarket, with a mixture of leather and Alcantara upholstery, privacy glass, a colour screen between the gauges and even an umbrella under the passenger seat. Safety gets a boost, too, with autonomous emergency braking and auto-dipping LED headlights.
Sitting at the top of the range, the Laurin & Klement trim adds a 9.2-inch Columbus sat nav, electric front driver’s seat with memory function, keyless entry, lane-keeping assistance and a Canton stereo.
If you live off the beaten track, the Skoda Octavia Scout Estate has increased ride height, underbody protection and four-wheel drive. Inside, it gets leather and Alcantara, the Amundsen navigation system, LED headlights, heated front seats and lane-keeping technology.
The engine line-up remains similar to before, with tried-and-tested petrol and diesel models. As always, the Octavia faces no shortage of competition, including the Volkswagen Golf, SEAT Leon, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 308 and radically different Honda Civic.
Design
Although there aren’t any major changes to the Octavia’s styling, the biggest alterations are at the front. The headlights are now more angular two-piece items rather than the more staid one-piece units on the outgoing car. The front grille is wider and deeper, and it’s now divided in the middle by a solid piece of black trim. The front bumper has also been revised, with more horizontal lines to emphasise the car’s width. You’re able to specify LED lighting up front, too.
New 2017 Skoda Octavia vRS
Skoda has been steadily building the reputation of its performance vRS brand and the new Octavia vRS looks set to continue this trend. The 2017 vRS Octavia continues to be offered with a petrol or diesel engine and the revised 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol now produces 227bhp – up 10bhp from the standard version of the old model. The diesel vRS’ power is unchanged, although it’s available with four-wheel drive as an option, while there’s also a more powerful vRS 245 petrol model, producing 242bhp and getting the hatchback from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds and the Estate in 6.7 seconds.
Skoda continues to offer the Octavia vRS as a hatchback or estate, with both models getting full LED headlights and sports seats as standard, as well as revised bumpers with ‘honeycomb’ detailing. Other equipment highlights include ambient lighting, aluminium pedals, optional Alcantara suede fabric seats and LED lights for the rear number plate – a small detail, but one that should look pretty good at night.
Interior
Inside, there are extensive updates to the equipment and technology on offer. The touchscreen infotainment screens are more responsive than before, while the top-of-the-range 9.2-inch Columbus system is available with a wi-fi hot spot. This system can be ordered with a SIM card to provide a high-speed internet connection for several devices at once. You can also specify a version of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit configurable digital instrument screen that can show things like sat-nav instructions and your media as well as speed and engine revs.
Also available on the revised Octavia is the Skoda Care Connect service, which made its debut on the Skoda Kodiaq SUV. This allows you to check some features of the car and find it in a car park, and will automatically contact emergency services following a collision that deploys the airbags.
The revised Octavia is also available with SmartLink connectivity system, which includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink mobile phone connectivity. These allow you to control certain features on your phone from the car’s touchscreen, while Skoda’s ‘Phonebox’ – which charges your phone wirelessly, as well as boosting its signal via the car’s aerial – is also available.
New Skoda ‘Simply Clever’ features include a configurable key that allows multiple users to have their own settings for the car (such as favourite radio stations and preferred seat positions), a heated steering wheel and folding tables on the back of the front seats. Meanwhile, the estate version gets a removable LED torch in the boot.
Driving assistance systems
You’re also able to specify a raft of driving-assistance systems on the 2017 Octavia, including Trailer Assist, which will steer your car and trailer into a space for you. There’s also autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which will tell you if there’s any approaching traffic as you reverse out of a parking space. A reversing camera is available, too.
Engines
Two petrol and two diesel engines are available. The petrols are a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder and a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder, producing 114 and 148bhp respectively. The big-selling diesels are 1.6 and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, which also produce 114 and 148bhp respectively. Most of the range comes with five or six-speed manual gearboxes as standard, while six- and seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatics are also available.
Price and on-sale date
Prices for the new Skoda Octavia hatchback start at £17,055 on the road for the Octavia S. There’s a £1,200 premium for estate models, which start at £18,255.
You’ll need to step up to the SE trim if you want a 1.4-litre TSI petrol or 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, and on to the SE L if you want to mate the 2.0-litre TDI with an automatic gearbox. Order books opened in January 2017.
