New 2019 Audi S8 super-saloon revealed

The new Audi S8 saloon has been revealed ahead of its UK launch later this year. It will feature a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine producing 563bhp with 48-volt mild-hybrid tech and quattro all-wheel-drive. When it arrives in showrooms, the flagship model will rival the fastest versions of the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Prices have yet to be announced, but we’d expect the new S8 to cost from around £100,000.

While Audi hasn’t disclosed any performance figures yet, the 0-62mph sprint is expected to take around four seconds. According to carmaker, the mild-hybrid system improves fuel economy by allowing the engine to shut down while coasting or decelerating.

The S8 gets what Audi call ‘predictive active suspension’, which uses radar and satellite guidance to help keep the ride as smooth as possible. Each wheel is individually managed to reduce the effects of imperfections in the road surface, improving the comfort and control of the car. You can select from five different driving modes, with a new Comfort+ setting capable of reducing body roll through corners.

Audi says that the standard fit all-wheel steering on the S8 offers improved handling, a reduced turning circle at lower speeds and improved stability at motorway speeds. Optional ceramic disc brakes are also available.

Fast S8 models have always looked quite understated, and the new model continues this trend. Nevertheless, look closely, and you’ll notice the slightly more aggressive bumpers and four exhaust pipe finishers at the back. Audi confirmed that the S8 can be specced with alloy wheels up to 21 inches in size, but has not yet confirmed the size of the standard wheels for UK cars. Buyers can also opt for a Black styling pack to replace all of the chrome exterior trim with dark trim.

The interior is as luxurious as you’d expect from Audi’s flagship saloon with electronically adjustable quilted leather seats that are both heated and ventilated. The centre console features Audi’s MMI dual-screen infotainment system, including Amazon Alexa’s voice assistant. Smartphone connectivity for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is included, as well as a digital dial cluster with a special S-performance instrument layout.
