Official first look at MG’s new electric family SUV!
The new MG4-based electric SUV has been shown off ahead of its 2025 release
- New electric SUV to replace the MG ZS EV
- Based on the MG4 hatchback
- Coming in 2025 with circa £30k price tag
This is our first official look at MG’s new electric family SUV, designed to replace the old MG ZS EV. Unlike the recently unveiled MG ZS hybrid, this new SUV is based on the same electric underpinnings as the MG4, and sports a fresh exterior design to set it apart from its SUV stablemates.
MG is carrying some serious momentum into 2025, having released the new ZS and HS SUVs earlier this year, as well as the MG3 hatchback and the Cyberster sports car. The new electric family SUV will further expand MG’s offering in the UK, and the brand will be hoping to lure buyers away from rivals like the Renault Scenic, Volvo EX30 and BYD Atto 3.
What do we know about MG’s new electric SUV?
MG has unveiled its new electric SUV in China, where it’s named the ES5. We don’t know if that name will stick when it lands on our shores, but MG’s Head of Product and Planning in the UK David Allison has said that the new SUV won’t be called the ZS EV, despite replacing that model.
Unlike that outgoing car, the new electric SUV is based on the same platform as the popular MG4 hatchback, which was crowned Carbuyer’s Best Electric Family Car in 2024. It should inherit the same battery and electric motor configurations, meaning a rear-mounted single motor and upwards of 300 miles of range for top-spec models. A dual-motor all-wheel drive variant could be in the pipeline, too, if the new SUV is to follow the trend set by the MG4 XPower.
The new SUV is longer, wider and lower than the outgoing ZS EV, with a similar footprint to cars like the Ford Explorer, Renault Scenic and new Skoda Elroq. It also picks up a close family resemblance with its MG4 sibling; there’s a similarly angular nose with a pair of slim LED headlights, and the rear light-bar is the same shape as the MG4’s.
The interior has seen a significant upgrade over the old ZS EV – you’ll find a large touchscreen mounted centrally, along with a new digital driver’s display. The dashboard and centre console are notably absent of any buttons – besides a row of five shortcuts – so we expect most functions to be controlled through that central touchscreen.
How much will MG’s new SUV cost?
MG is a brand known for its excellent value, so expectations are high for the new SUV to deliver the same ‘bang for the buck’. A sub-£30,000 starting price is the target according to Allison, but official pricing won’t be confirmed until closer to the UK launch date.
