New Jaguar Type 00 snapped testing ahead of 2025 reveal
New spy shots reveal that Jag’s polarising new EV isn’t far off production
- New electric four-door GT car
- First new Jaguar as part of ‘Reimagine’ campaign
- Full reveal due in 2025
Development of the all-new electric Jaguar Type 00 looks to be in full swing, judging by these latest spy shots. The big four-door coupe was recently spotted undergoing on-road testing in snowy conditions, hinting that the production-ready version isn’t all that far off.
While the camouflage of this test car does a good job of hiding the details, we already have a strong sense of the new Jag’s design. The Jaguar Type 00 concept unveiled late last year generated a global media frenzy, with its controversial monolith looks and swanky new logos. The full reveal of the production car is expected to take place later this year, marking the start of a new all-electric era for the British brand.
What will the new Jaguar Type 00 look like?
From what we’ve seen so far in these spy shots and with the Type 00 concept, Jag’s new GT represents a major design departure from its previous models. The sharp creases and flat surfaces couldn’t look any more different to the curvaceous lines of the Jaguar XF and Jaguar F-Type. “Exuberant modernism” is the phrase that Jaguar has coined for the new look, and it’s said to “respect the past and inspire what’s to come”.
First things first, the new Jaguar appears to be a four-door coupe – unlike the Type 00 concept – which would be a first for the brand. Jaguar built its reputation with the likes of the XK, E-Type and XJS, so coupes are very much in its DNA, but the addition of an extra set of doors could provide the practicality needed to rival the Porsche Taycan.
It’s also big. The sheer width of the Type 00 is evident in these spy shots, with a mass of bonnet stretching out ahead of the windscreen. This is rather unlike other premium electric cars we’ve seen to date, which tend to look more curvaceous in an effort to improve aerodynamics.
It’s tricky to make out the front-end design from these spy shots – the test car appears to have a set of makeshift headlights fitted, and that big grille is almost certainly a red herring. Moving to the rear, we can just see a pair of thin LED tail-lights, which aren’t too far off what we saw on the Type 00 concept. We expect them to stretch across the full width of the rear of the production Type 00.
Interestingly, the fastback roof design appears to have changed quite dramatically from the concept car. The simple, curved roofline that stretched to the very rear has been swapped for a more traditional flat rear deck with a bootlid – think more BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe rather than Jaguar F-Type. That said, there’s still plenty of camo disguising the true roofline of this test car, so there’s still wiggle room for the production car to look a bit different.
The keen eyed among you will spot that the test car doesn’t have a rear window, just like the Type 00 concept. There’s a good chance that the production car will feature a similar flat panel – a bit like the Polestar 4. The transition from concept to production car has brought a few changes though, notably the pair of conventional wing mirrors.
We don’t know much about what lies under the skin of the new Jaguar yet. It’s been confirmed to use an entirely new platform dedicated for EVs, but that’s about it. Jaguar’s first and only EV to date, the I-Pace, shared parts with the brand’s other combustion models, so the new GT represents a different approach. But that’s to be expected, given that Jaguar has announced plans to transition to a fully-electric luxury brand over the next few years.
The new Type 00 will spearhead this revolution, arriving in 2025 with a price tag in the region of £130,000. It will be built in the UK at its Solihull plant, along with future electric models from Jaguar and Land Rover.
What’s next for Jaguar?
Things have been a bit quiet for Jaguar in recent years. Its last all-new model to hit the market was the I-Pace back in 2018, which is ancient history in today’s fast-moving world of hybrid and electric cars. Since late 2024, you haven’t even been able to place an order for a new Jag – dealers are shifting the last of their remaining stock, and then that’ll be curtains for the XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace, I-Pace and F-Type.
So what’s next? Well, the Type 00 will be the first step in a new direction for Jaguar – a fully-electric direction. Jaguar Land Rover, JLR for short, revealed its ‘Reimagine’ strategy last year, focusing on a transition to electric power and a return to the luxury market. The Type 00 will lead the charge for a whole new era of electric Jags, arriving with a price tag to elevate it above brands like BMW, Mercedes and Audi.
