These are the cars facing a £2,745 VED tax hike in 2025
Popular models from Ford, Audi, Porsche and more will see huge VED increases next year
First year Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates are set to soar from April 2025 for petrol and diesel cars, with the most polluting models seeing increases of up to £2,745.
The UK Government announced the changes in the 2024 Autumn Budget, in an effort to “widen the difference between zero-emission, hybrid and internal combustion engine cars." You can find out more about the changes in our VED road tax explainer, but the key point is that first year VED rates are doubling for petrol and diesel cars that emit over 75g/km of CO2 – that’s pretty much all of them.
For a typical hatchback that emits 120g/km of CO2, buyers will have to pay £440 rather than £220 in the first year from April 2025. But cars in the highest tax band – 255g/km of CO2 and up – will now have to pay £5,490 of tax in year one, up from £2,745. Bear in mind that first year VED costs are rolled into a new car’s ‘on the road’ (OTR) price. If you purchase a new car through PCP finance, this increase will probably be factored into your monthly payments.
There are 56 models in total affected by the biggest change and all also incur the luxury car surcharge, reserved for cars that cost over £40,000. All in, you’ll be paying £8,590 of VED over the first six years of ownership for the cars on this list if you purchase the car from April 2025 onwards.
