New Volvo ES90: flagship electric saloon unveiled with 435-mile range
First new Volvo saloon in nearly a decade arrives with electric power and a £70k starting price

- All-new electric executive saloon
- Range of up to 435 miles
- Starting price of £69,650
Brand new executive saloons don’t come around all that often, so we were a little excited when the first teasers of the new Volvo ES90 dropped last week. Now Sweden’s latest EV has been fully unveiled, giving us an unimpeded view of its sleek four-door styling and full technical details.
The headline figures look pretty good on paper. Up to 435 miles of range, 671bhp in its highest-performance variant and charging speeds of up to 350kW – all enough to get any electric enthusiast a bit giddy. Of course, all that tech is wrapped in a typically slick, Scandinavian design with a classy interior, which Volvo hopes will be enough to sway customers away from a BMW i5 or an Audi A6 e-tron.
What does the Volvo ES90 look like?

Like a saloon, but something’s slightly off isn’t it? It’s hard to pin down exactly what the Volvo ES90 is, and it seems the Swedish brand isn’t even sure itself – it claims the ES90 is “in a class of its own”, combining elements of saloons, fastbacks and even SUVs into one slickly-styled package.
That might ring a few bells for anyone who’s seen a Polestar 2 before, and there’s more than a passing resemblance between the two EVs. Its four-door body is saloon-like in its proportions, but it sits higher off the ground than your typical BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class. Similarly, the rear decklid is very short, with a roofline that stretches back to meet a subtle spoiler. Even the headlights and tail-lights give us a hint of Polestar.
But look a bit closer and the Volvo ES90 stands apart with its simple shapes and detailing. Much like its EX90 SUV sibling, there’s no faux grille here, just a big Volvo logo between the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights. The T-shaped daytime-running lights are broken into multiple segments; that’s a theme repeated at the rear, where an extra set of brake lights sit either side of the rear window tying the ES90 back to the EX30 and EX90.

Customers will have a choice of seven paint colours, while wheel sizes will range from 20 to 22 inches. Fans of Volvo's estate cars, including the V60 and V90, might be a bit disappointed – the brand has confirmed that it has no plans to build any more estate cars in the future, so there won't be a wagon-bodied ES90.
What about the Volvo ES90’s interior?
Volvo highlights “premium comfort, authentic materials and purpose-driven design” as the three key themes of the ES90’s cabin. It’s a similar layout to the EX90’s interior, with a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen mounted in the centre of the dashboard and not much else besides a small digital display for the driver.
Physical controls are few and far between, although you do get a volume wheel and a pair of buttons for skipping songs. The gear selector is a stalk that’s mounted to the steering column to free up more space on the centre console, which features a storage cubby and a space for wirelessly charging your smartphone.

Volvo says customers will have a choice of several upholstery options, and there’s plenty of standard kit. All ES90s come with a panoramic sunroof, but you upgrade to an electrochromic version which can transition from transparent to opaque with the touch of a button.
The ‘premium comfort’ aspect of the interior is exemplified by the ES90’s wheelbase (that’s the length between the front and rear wheels). At 3,100mm, the wheels are pushed further apart than the BMW i5’s and Audi A6 e-tron’s, which should translate to more interior space than both. Volvo also claims that the ES90’s cabin is one of the quietest it's ever designed, adding to the opulent experience.
You get a 424-litre boot, along with a 22-litre front boot which can be used as a home for your charging cable. That’s not quite as spacious as some rivals, but its hatchback opening should make loading and unloading easier, while the rear seats fold flat to increase cargo capacity to 733 litres.
What about the range, performance and charging speeds?

This is an area where the ES90 has to excel if it’s to steal sales from other premium brands, and things are off to a good start. There are three ES90 models to pick from – Single Motor, Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance – and all use an 800-volt electric architecture compatible with charging speeds of up to 350kW. That’s up there with the best in class.
The ES90 Single Motor gets an 88kWh battery and a 328bhp motor driving the rear wheels. It’ll crack 404 miles on a full charge, while the 0-62mph sprint is over in 6.9 seconds.
The Twin Motor model gets an additional motor powering the front wheels for four-wheel drive. Crucially, it gets a bigger battery with a capacity of 102kWh, giving it a handy range increase to 435 miles – that makes it one of the longest-range EVs around. With 443bhp on tap, it will complete the 0-62mph dash in just 5.6 seconds.

The Twin Motor Performance brings – as the name suggests – a bit more speed. Its range figure is identical to the regular Twin Motor’s, but power has been upped to 671bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of four seconds flat – just two tenths behind the BMW i5 M60. Putting our practicality hats back on, both Twin Motor models can tow up to 2,000kg, but expect range to take a serious hit.
How much does the Volvo ES90 cost and when can I buy one?
Pricing for the Volvo ES90 kicks off at £69,650 in the UK, so it’s the most expensive option against the BMW i5 and Audi Q6 e-tron. That gets you the ES90 ‘Plus’ – upgrading to the ‘Ultra’ model costs £9,400. For your extra cash, you get a host of extra features, including the electrochromic sunroof, active air suspension, an upgraded sound system, pixel LED lights and larger wheels to name a few.
Go for the standard ES90 Plus, and you’re limited to the Single Motor configuration. Customers who want the Twin Motor or Twin Motor Performance models will have to spring for the Ultra trim level, costing £83,250 or £87,850, respectively.
Order books are now open for the ES90, but the first customers will have to wait until spring of 2026 for their cars to arrive.
