Dacia Sandero supermini unveiled
The budget rival to the Ford Fiesta gets an all-new model.
The new Dacia Sandero will join the Duster SUV to launch the Renault-owned company’s two-pronged assault on the UK car market. Like the soon-to-be-released Duster, the Sandero will be amazingly cheap: prices and specifications will be confirmed closer to the UK launch in January, but you can expect it to cost as little as £7,000. That’s £2,000 cheaper than the Ford Fiesta.
The second-generation Sandero will share styling with the soon-to-be-announced Logan saloon (which won’t be available in the UK). Both cars aim to project a strong, robust image.
On the inside, more attention will be paid to quality, with improved materials and a better overall fit and finish. The dashboard instrument surrounds and gear lever will be finished in chrome trim. A new dark charcoal colour scheme incorporates a coloured trim that coordinates with the doors and a steering wheel insert. The Sandero will also have a 320-litre boot with 60:40 split-fold rear seats.
As with the Duster, the entry-level Sandero will be stripped right back, which means no alloy wheels, electric mirrors or air-con. ABS and power steering will still come as standard, though. Mid-range models will have body-coloured bumpers, front foglights and height-adjustable driver’s seat, while top-of-the-range cars will get alloys and a trip computer. There’s no word yet on whether the base model will ape the Duster and come without a stereo.
