Toyota bZ4X SUV - Practicality & boot space

The Toyota bZ4X is about 4.7m long, nearly 1.9m wide and 1.6m high, so it’s bigger than you might think. It’s a similar size to a Kia EV6, which is one of its main rivals. The wheelbase is 2,850mm, which is quite long and it means there’s a lot of space in the cabin.

There’s plenty of space in the back of the bZ4X for passengers, although the floor is quite high, so adults will find that they are forced to sit with their knees in the air. There’s still adequate legroom and headroom, but it’s not the most comfortable seating position for long trips. It’s an issue a number of electric cars suffer from, because of the necessity to place the battery pack under the floor.

Interior storage is okay, but there’s no glovebox, which is a glaring omission. There’s storage for your phone while it’s charging (wirelessly), plus cupholders and a useful box under the armrest on the centre console, too. The door bins are nice and big, which is useful for carrying drinks bottles.

There are 452 litres of boot space available in the bZ4X, which is a little less than the 480 litres on offer in a Kia EV6 and quite a way off the 543-litre boot in the Volkswagen ID.4. The seats in the bZ4X do fold down, but they don’t go completely flat because of the batteries under the floor.

Towing

The bZ4X can tow a 750kg trailer, which is reasonable for an electric car – many aren’t rated for towing at all – but nowhere near as good as many other SUVs at a similar price.
