New Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport SUV revealed
Toyota’s compact SUV gets a sporty new look and improved suspension
- Yaris Cross gains sporty exterior styling
- Suspension upgrades promise improved driving feel
- Available to pre-order from the third quarter of 2022
The Toyota Yaris lineup is set to gain a sporty new addition with the introduction of the Cross GR. The compact hybrid SUV features exterior and interior tweaks inspired by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division, while the car's suspension has also been tuned for sharper handling.
Toyota claims that the new GR Sport retains the qualities that make the Yaris Cross a successful compact SUV for urban driving, while also delivering sharpened performance and improved steering feel for the driver. Pre-sales of the new Yaris Cross GR Sport will begin towards the Autumn, while prices are yet to be announced. If it costs the same as the Excel trim, expect to pay just over £28,500
Exterior and interior
The Yaris Cross GR Sport gains some sporty new touches to distinguish it from the standard models, including new 18-inch alloy wheels, a new rear diffuser and a front grille finished in a gloss black mesh pattern. It also sports distinctive GR badging. A new Ash Grey finish will feature as the car’s signature colour, while Scorched Orange will be an exclusive colour option. A bi-tone finish with a contrasting black roof and window pillars will also be available.
On the inside, the Yaris Cross GR Sport gains black Ultrasuede sport seats in the front with red contrast stitching, while similar stitchwork features on the car’s steering wheel and gear lever. The GR logo has been scattered throughout the car’s interior, adorning the front headrests, carpet mats, starter button, combimeter and steering wheel, while GR Sport-specific gunmetal silver trim inserts can be found on the doors and instrument panel.
The Yaris Cross GR Sport remains a convenient and practical option, with up to 397 litres of boot space with all seats in place or 1,097 litres with the rear seats folded. Standard equipment includes Toyota’s nine-inch Smart Connect multimedia system with smartphone integration and cloud-based navigation, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and rear privacy glass.
Engines
The Yaris Cross GR Sport will use Toyota’s three-cylinder 1.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force engine, though specific figures are yet to be revealed. We expect it to retain the same power as the standard model, though, with 114bhp sent to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox.
