Volkswagen ID.7 Estate spied in testing
Spy shots of the Volkswagen ID.7 in estate form have emerged, here’s what we know so far
- ID.7 Estate variant will offer larger boot and extra rear headroom
- Spacious, more upmarket interior than previous ID cars
- Anticipated range of up to 430 miles
The Volkswagen ID.7 electric car has been in the works for some time now, but so far we’ve only got to see it in saloon guise – now our exclusive spy photographs reveal that a Volkswagen ID.7 Estate is in the pipeline, and how it’s shaping up.
The electric estate car market is rather sparse at present, with the MG 5 EV the first electric car with an extended boot offered in the UK. Now the estate version of the upcoming ID.7 has been spotted and appears to be near production-ready.
As you’d expect, the spy shots reveal the ID.7 Estate will be slightly elongated and upright compared to the saloon, with a silhouette somewhat reminiscent of the Skoda Enyaq iV SUV which is based on the same platform, albeit sitting lower to the ground.
The front and rear of the ID.7 Estate have been more heavily camouflaged, but we can expect it to have a front fascia nearly identical to the standard saloon’s design.
Like the saloon, the ID.7 Estate’s interior is expected to get many of Volkswagen’s latest design and tech innovations, including a large 12.9-inch infotainment screen with backlit buttons sitting underneath for quicker access to many of the system’s main features. The interior also seems to be an improvement over older ID models, with higher-quality, soft-touch materials used throughout.
We were impressed with the interior room of the saloon model when we tested a prototype, with clever, practical features such as extra storage compartments under the dashboard and elsewhere around the cabin. Despite its tapering roofline, the ID.7 saloon felt spacious in the back and had a reasonably sized boot. Of course, the estate version is expected to be even more practical, so you can expect a much larger boot and an increase in rear passenger headroom thanks to its new roofline.
The Volkswagen ID.7 Estate is expected to be offered with rear-wheel drive as standard and get a hotter GTX performance variant with four-wheel drive. From what we know about the saloon’s lineup, we can expect entry-level models to be offered with an electric motor producing 178bhp, and a mid-range model with 282bhp – an anticipated dual-motor setup for the GTX could produce up to 335bhp. The hot four-wheel drive GTX could be capable of a 0-62mph time of just 5.6 seconds.
The ID.7 is rumoured to be going on sale with an entry-level 77kWh battery with a range of up to 382 miles, and a larger 82kWh battery with a class-leading 435-mile range. We’d expect the range for the estate version to be very similar to this, although it’s unclear whether it will be available with both battery options or just the larger unit.
Both the saloon and estate variants of the ID.7 will be capable of 200kW fast charging, meaning a 10-80% top-up charge in just half an hour when connected to a compatible public charger.
