New Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB and GTX models bring more space and speed

Two new variants join the Volkswagen ID. Buzz range, while the standard model gets a healthy power bump

The electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz lineup has grown two models larger today, with the debut of the LWB (long wheelbase) and GTX versions. While the former brings an additional pair of rear seats, the GTX gets the same performance treatment that we’ve seen with the ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX, delivering hot hatch rivalling speed.

Prices for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB start from £59,545 – only £510 more than the current five-seater ID. Buzz. The ID. Buzz GTX is expected to cost a fair chunk more, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being one of the most expensive models in the Volkswagen range.

What’s new for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB?

We’re fans of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, but its five-seat layout has always been slightly at odds with its MPV proportions, limiting its appeal with larger families. For the new LWB model, Volkswagen has grafted an additional 250mm between the front and rear wheels, translating to more interior space, larger sliding doors and room for up to seven seats. 

The extra pair of seats finally allows the ID. Buzz to compete with traditional seven-seat MPV rivals such as the Mercedes V-Class and the Peugeot e-Traveller, as well as Volkswagen’s own petrol-powered Multivan. Five-seat and six-seat versions will be offered, too, with up to 1,340 litres of boot space available in the former. Even the seven-seater has 306 litres of space behind the rearmost seats.

With a longer wheelbase, Volkswagen has been able to squeeze a larger battery into the ID. Buzz LWB, up from 77kWh to 86kWh. When fitted with 19-inch wheels, it’ll manage up to 286 miles of range, a healthy improvement over the 257-mile range of the standard model. Volkswagen has also taken the opportunity to replace the 201bhp electric motor with a new 282bhp unit, which should deliver nippier performance. It’ll find its way into standard ID. Buzz models, too.

What about the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX? 

While the ID. Buzz LWB trades on practicality, the ID. Buzz GTX caters to customers wanting something speedy as well as spacious. It adopts the same dual motor layout found in the new ID.3 GTX, with a combined power output of 335bhp. That’s enough to cut the ID. Buzz’s 0-62mph from 10.6 seconds to just 6.1 seconds – only marginally behind the new Golf GTI.

There are some neat visual changes, as well, including a bespoke front bumper and some gloss black trim pieces. The 21-inch alloy wheels are new, as is the Cherry Red paint colour. As we’ve seen with other GTX models, the sporty ID. Buzz gets some red upholstery details inside, along with a standard-fit panoramic glass roof.

How much do the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz models cost?

UK pricing has been confirmed to start from £59,545 for the ID. Buzz LWB, which is only £510 more than the standard wheelbase version. Upgrading from standard ‘Life’ trim to ‘Style’ adds an extra £4,800 to the bill, but brings niceties such as matrix LED headlights, power sliding doors, a head-up display and a premium sound system.

There’s no word on ID. Buzz GTX pricing yet, but if it follows the trend set by other GTX models, it could cost up to £10,000 more than the base model. That would translate to a starting price of around £70,000, making it one of the most expensive models in Volkswagen’s lineup.
