Volkswagen ID.7 has the longest range in its class thanks to new battery
New Pro S Match trim for the Volkswagen ID.7 sees its range increase to a Tesla-beating 437 miles
- New Pro S Match trim with 86kWh battery
- Up to 437 miles of range
- On sale in the UK now
Range is often viewed as one of the most important yardsticks for comparing electric cars, and the Volkswagen ID.7 now sits at the top of its class, courtesy of a larger battery. A new 86kWh battery gives the ID.7 a range of up to 437 miles – more than any electric executive car currently on sale.
The battery comes as part of a new trim level, named Pro S Match, available for both the ID.7 saloon and the ID.7 Tourer. Both are available to order now in the UK, costing from £55,450 and £56,140, respectively.
What’s new for the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S Match?
The new Pro S Match trim for the Volkswagen ID.7 is all about range. You get a bigger 86kWh battery – Pro Match cars make do with a 77kWh unit – and a class-leading 437-mile range as a result.
The Polestar 2 comes close with a maximum range of 410 miles, while the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BMW i4 are yet to break out of the 300s. Only the Mercedes EQS can top the Volkswagen with a range of 480 miles – but you’ll be paying double the price.
The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer can also be ordered in Pro S Match trim with the bigger battery, although range suffers marginally, most likely due to its extra weight. Even so, a range of up to 425 miles puts it well ahead of all of the electric estate car competition.
Besides the battery, everything else is carried over from the existing ID.7 Pro Match, meaning you get a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, heated and massaging front seats, a head-up display, LED matrix headlights and three-zone air conditioning.
What is the Volkswagen ID.7?
The Volkswagen ID.7 is its flagship electric car, competing with other executive EVs such as the Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4. It’s one of the most expensive cars that the German carmaker sells, although its starting price has gradually reduced since it launched in 2023.
All Volkswagen ID.7s use the same rear-mounted 282bhp electric motor found across many of its other EVs, including the ID.5 SUV and the recently-updated ID. Buzz. It’s powerful enough to motivate the ID.7 from 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds – although the Pro S Match is 0.1 seconds behind due to its heavier battery.
The ID.7 is also available as an estate, called the ID.7 Tourer, or as a hotted-up sporty EV with the new ID.7 GTX.
