Look out, Tesla – XPeng G6 electric SUV on sale now from under £40k
Chinese firm XPeng has launched its first model in the UK and it undercuts the Tesla Model Y
- New XPeng G6 electric SUV available now in the UK
- Up to 354 miles of range for Long Range model
- Prices start from £39,990
Electric car buyers in the UK now have one more model to weigh up, as the new XPeng G6 has just gone on sale. The electric family car is among the many newcomers squaring up against the popular Tesla Model Y, and it looks to have cost on its side.
Prices start from £39,990, which is around £7,000 less than the cheapest Model Y you can buy right now. Granted, we expect a cheaper version of the facelifted Model Y to arrive later this year, but the XPeng G6 is still priced competitively against other electric SUVs, such as the Skoda Enyaq and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Who is XPeng and what is the XPeng G6?
We don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of XPeng before. The electric car maker only started building its first model in 2018, but it’s since hit the ground running in its home market. There are no less than six XPeng models currently on sale across the world, ranging from sleek saloon cars to luxurious people-carriers.
The only model we’ll be getting is the XPeng G6 – for now, at least. The electric mid-size SUV is similar in size to the Tesla Model Y, offering seating for five under its swoopy roof. It’s been on sale in China for over a year, where it’s offered with a choice of two battery sizes.
Both versions are offered over here, too. The entry-level model uses a 66kWh battery for a range of 270 miles, powering a single 254bhp electric motor. That’s powerful enough to launch it from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.
Then there’s the Long Range model, which uses a bigger 88kWh battery that gives it 354 miles of range as a result – identical to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range. Mind you, that’s still not enough to trump the range figures of the Model Y, Skoda Enyaq or Renault Scenic. The G6 Long Range gets a different electric motor, too, with 281bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds.
Both models have pretty impressive charging speeds. The standard model will charge at 215kW, while the Long Range can charge at up to 280kW. Find a compatible rapid charger, and the latter can top up from 10 to 80% in under 20 minutes.
How much does the XPeng G6 cost?
The XPeng G6 is now on sale in the UK, costing from £39,990. That gets you the Standard Range model – upgrading to the Long Range model with its bigger battery increases the price to £44,990.
There’s just one trim level, so both the Standard and Long Range models get the same standard equipment. That includes a big 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.2-inch driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree parking camera, a heat pump and heated rear seats.
All models also get the same 20-inch alloy wheels, but there are five paint colours – the striking orange colour in these pictures is a £900 option.
The first XPeng dealerships in the UK are expected to open in March, with more locations opening by 2026. That’ll be just in time for the arrival of XPeng’s next model, the X9, which is an electric premium MPV.
