Porsche Macan goes electric! All-new SUV debuts with up to 630bhp

Porsche’s best-seller is reborn for the electric age, with up to 381 miles of range

  • Ground-up EV design
  • Up to 381 miles of range
  • Starts from £69,800

The long-awaited reveal of the new Porsche Macan has finally taken place. After 10 years and over 800,000 sales, the outgoing model has been replaced by a clean sheet design, swapping petrol power for batteries. Using the lessons learned from its first EV, the Taycan, Porsche hopes to bring electric power to a larger audience, and claims the new Macan will be the “sportiest model in its segment”.

Two variants of the new Macan will be offered initially, the base Macan 4 and the range-topping Macan Turbo. Utilising an entirely new electric-only platform, jointly developed with Audi, both models feature the same battery and motor configuration but offer different levels of performance. Prices will start from £69,800 with the first cars reaching customers during the second half of this year.

What is the range and performance of the new Porsche Macan?

The new Porsche Macan will only be available as an EV, using the firm’s latest 800-volt electrical system. Power is provided by a 100kWh battery, 95kWh of which is usable, driving a pair of electric motors. Front and rear axles each get their own electric motor, combining for four-wheel drive, although it’s unclear whether a cheaper single-motor model will appear in the future.

Official range stands at 381 miles for the Macan 4 and 367 miles for the Macan Turbo, both models travelling further than the Taycan. The new battery supports rapid charging up to 270kW, with a 10 to 80% charge achievable in as little as 21 minutes. There’s a heat pump fitted as standard, along with regenerative braking and an 11kW AC onboard charger for home wallbox charging.

The new electric powertrain has resulted in an impressive leap in performance over the outgoing Macan. The Macan 4 produces 402bhp, enough to shift its circa-2,200kg kerb weight from 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds. The Macan Turbo ramps things up considerably, with a colossal 630bhp – that’s 9bhp more than the Maserati MC20 supercar. A 0-62mph sprint is achieved in an equally rapid 3.3 seconds.

There’s plenty of other interesting tech to support the new Macan’s performance, from active aerodynamics to an ‘overboost’ function. The chassis is aided by optional air suspension and rear-wheel steering, helping to improve ride and handling. We had a chance to drive a prototype of the new Macan last year and were left thoroughly impressed.

What does the new Porsche Macan look like?

As with most new models from the German marque, it’s an evolution of a familiar design, albeit with design influences from the Taycan. The mid-size SUV form factor is retained, although new bodywork has helped to create what Porsche claims is “one of the most streamlined SUVs on the market”. Overall length has increased by 58mm, but the wheels are pushed out further towards the corners of the car, resulting in a longer wheelbase with shorter front and rear overhangs.

The front is dominated by new headlights, split into two sections. The upper component houses the daytime running lights, whereas the lower unit contains the headlights, with matrix LED items available as an option. At the back, the roofline slopes downward in a couple-esque fashion and a new lightbar stretches across the width of the car.

What does the interior of the new Porsche Macan look like?

The interior is all-new too, and closely resembles that found in the recently facelifted Porsche Panamera. A curved 12.9-inch driver’s display sits behind the steering wheel alongside a central 10.9-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Pay extra, and Porsche will fit an additional 10.9-inch display for the front passenger to have all to themselves.

The infotainment system runs Porsche’s latest software, complete with a voice assistant and app store. If all of that doesn’t sound like enough kit for you, there’s an optional head-up display with augmented-reality navigation directions to satisfy your technological cravings.

Porsche has moved the gear selector from the centre console to the dashboard in order to free up space for a new, simplified climate control panel. There’s ambient lighting throughout the interior, too, which changes with the selected driving mode and will flash warnings for the driver assistance system.

How much will the new Porsche Macan cost and when can I order one?

Prices start at £69,800 for Macan 4, rising to £95,000 for the Macan Turbo. As with other Porsche models, we expect additional variants to join the lineup at a later date, offering varying levels of performance at different price points. The first deliveries are due in the second half of 2024.
