Toyota bids farewell to the GR Supra with special send-off editions

The Toyota GR Supra sports car has been on sale since 2019, though in more recent times details about its future have been somewhat hazy. Now Toyota has confirmed it’s on its way out for good but not before the arrival of two special-edition farewell models. 

The first is a very limited-run model, aptly named the GR Supra Final Edition which Toyota says gets increased performance, better handling and some unique aerodynamic additions to help it stand out as the ultimate version of the fifth-generation of the sports car.

The second version is named the GR Supra Lightweight EVO. It’s a more driver-focused model compared to the standard GR Supra, but not quite as exclusive as the Final Edition. It’s been tweaked and improved as a result of driver feedback, but there has been no announcement regarding how many will be made.

What’s different about the GR Supra Final Edition?

The GR Supra Final Edition gets the model’s 3.0-litre straight-six engine paired with the six-speed manual transmission. This time, though, power has been increased by around 96bhp for a total of 429bhp thanks to some upgrades under the bonnet.

The handling has also been tweaked by Toyota, who says it should now feel more direct thanks to a reconfigured electric power steering system, while upgraded brakes and suspension also makes it feel more road-focused. Toyota has made it even more rigid by throwing in heavy-duty bracing in the back, and some striking aerodynamic upgrades include that more prominent rear spoiler.

On the inside, you get a pair of Recaro bucket seats – one finished in red Alcantara for the driver, and the other finished in black Alcantara – the exterior will be offered in an exclusive matte black finish. This model is set to be limited to just 300 examples globally.

What about the GR Supra Lightweight EVO?

Toyota hasn’t specified how many examples of the Lightweight EVO will be produced, but it’s had a less extreme overhaul than the extreme Final Edition. It also features a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with a six-speed manual, but the focus here has been on making the driving experience better by listening to customer feedback on the standard car.

The Lightweight EVO gets a new differential for improved traction and handling, larger brakes and overhauled suspension for a more connected feel to the road. Aerodynamic upgrades are less prominent than those on the Final Edition, but include a ducktail carbon fibre rear spoiler, new wheel arch flaps, and larger front tyre spats flanking the front bumper.

On the inside, the seats are finished in Alcantara with red stitching and GR logos.

Are the special GR Supra farewell models coming to the UK, and when can I buy one?

Toyota has officially stated that the GR Supra Final Edition and GR Supra Lightweight EVO will arrive in Europe in January 2025, but haven’t specified how many, if at all, will be arriving to UK shores in right-hand drive.
