BMW reveals drastically different X2 SUV

New coupe-SUV to get more drastic styling and more space

  • Slinkier styling more reminiscent of BMW’s larger coupe-SUV models
  • Two petrol powertrains announced, plus an all-electric iX2
  • Arrives in the UK in March 2024

BMW has revealed an all-new second-generation version of the X2 coupe-SUV, which is due to arrive in the UK in March of next year.

Two petrol versions have been announced in the form of the sDrive20i mild-hybrid and the sporty M35i, and there will also be an all-electric iX2 version, which you can read about separately.

Based on the latest third-generation X1 SUV, which arrived in 2022, the new X2 will have a much more distinctive shape than the rather conservative, slightly derivative body shape of the current X2, looking more like BMW’s larger coupe-SUVs, the X4 and X6.

In line with the X1 with which it shares its platform, it’s a considerably bigger car than before. It’s 194mm longer than its predecessor at 4,554mm, its wheelbase has grown by 22mm to 2,692mm, while the car is 1,845mm wide (+21mm) and 1,590mm tall (+64mm).

As a result, BMW promises more passenger space, and luggage capacity has grown as well. A maximum of 560 litres is available, which is 90 litres more than in the original X2, and that expands to 1,470 litres when you fold the rear seats down. The iX2’s boot is slightly smaller at 525 litres, while the mild-hybrid sDrive20i’s is down to 515 litres, although both expand to 1,400 litres in two-seat mode.

Inside the car, there’s a 10.7-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.25-inch central touchscreen, and both are housed behind a single piece of glass that curves around the driver. This high-tech infotainment system runs the latest version of BMW’s iDrive, called Operating System 9, and it includes a new “QuickSelect” feature, which provides shortcuts to activate functions without the need to trawl through endless submenus.

The range starts with the sDrive20i mild-hybrid, which uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and a small electric motor to deliver a combined output of 168bhp. This will get the X2 from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds.

The M35i xDrive is considerably more potent, however, thanks to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developing 296bhp and sending it to all four wheels, cutting the 0-62mph sprint down to 5.4 seconds.

The iX2 also has four-wheel drive thanks to its dual-motor setup, and the combined power output stands at 309bhp. It’ll get to 62mph from rest in 5.6 seconds. BMW says that its 64.8kWh battery is good for a range of up to 279 miles, and a maximum charging speed of 130kW means that a 10 to 80 per cent top-up can be delivered in just 29 minutes.

All versions are offered in M Sport trim as standard, and will come with equipment including alloy wheels, sports seats, adaptive suspension, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a powered tailgate and a suite of electronic driver aids.

The car is available to order now. The range starts at £39,365 for the sDrive20i, while the M35i will set you back £47,395 and the iX2 costs £56,540.
