Nissan announces the return of the Nissan Micra, and now it’s electrified

- New all-electric Micra
- Arriving in 2025
- 248-mile range
The Nissan Micra was once a staple of British roads, but in recent years it’s not been such a big seller. Now, though, Nissan is bringing the Micra back with an all-new formula – it’s now an EV that will hope to take on rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, Peugeot E-208 and the Renault 5.
As you might be able to tell from some of the Micra’s body lines, it’s actually been co-developed with one of those rivals, the Renault 5. However, the Micra gets a more out-there design, ditching the retro-inspired charm of the 5 with bold round daytime running lights up front surrounding slim units between them.
Nissan has only provided one picture of the Nissan Micra at the time of writing, so it’s as yet unclear how the back of it looks, and whether it differs greatly from the Renault 5’s design with high vertical-standing rear lights.
What’s the Nissan Micra’s range and performance like?
The Micra is based on the same underpinnings as the latest Renault 5, and that means it also gets the choice between a 40 and 52kWh battery. The larger of the two is good for up to 248 miles to a charge, though Nissan hasn’t given a figure for the smaller battery. From what we know about the Renault 5, though, this will provide a range of around 193 miles.
We’d also expect the same power outputs from the Micra as in the Renault 5, with the 40kWh battery model getting a front-mounted 118bhp motor and the 52kWh model getting 148bhp.
It’s unclear yet whether the Nissan Micra could get a performance Nismo variant, but it’s certainly possible given what Renault’s performance Alpine brand has done with the A290, a hot version of the 5.
What else do I need to know about the Nissan Micra?
Pricing hasn’t yet been revealed, but with the Renault 5 starting from just over £22,000, the Micra shouldn’t be far off, though it’s unclear which will be the cheaper car. The Micra will launch in 2025 and Nissan has also unveiled a brand new version of its Leaf EV with a look inspired by the Ariya, and has announced that an all-electric Juke is incoming in 2026, too.
