For a large MPV, the Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer is impressively economical and reasonably cheap to run. Predictably, the diesels are the most economical, while the petrols are pretty good, too. Servicing costs and intervals are about on par for the class.

The Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer's diesel models are the cheapest to run and the 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 emits only 128-157g/km of CO2 depending on specification. This places it in a midrange Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) bracket for company-car tax. The six-speed manual with this engine will manage up to 62.4mpg, while with the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic it will manage up to 57.8mpg.

If you cover a lower average mileage than 12,000 a year, the 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine makes sense. Its 128bhp makes it reasonably nippy, yet it can return up to 48.2mpg with a manual gearbox or 46mpg as an automatic. This engine also falls into an affordable BiK bracket regardless of the gearbox you choose. The petrol engine range was updated in autumn of 2019 to comply with new RDE2 regulations, also known as Euro 6.3 (6d), which come into effect in 2021.

Larger 18-inch alloy wheels improve the car's looks but also slightly increase CO2 emissions. All models cost the standard rate each year in VED (road tax) from the second year of ownership.

Insurance

The top-of-the-range 160 BlueHDi diesel is the costliest Grand C4 SpaceTourer to insure and sits in group 26. Compare that to the petrol model, which qualifies for less expensive group 18 insurance. Those figures are almost an exact match for the insurance costs of the Ford S-MAX.

Servicing

Citroen's ‘Originals’ service and repair plan fixes the cost of repairs for models less than three years old. It covers wear-and-tear items such as front brake pads (£115), windscreen wipers (£35) and the clutch (£699). An interim service is charged at £115, while a full service costs £195.

Warranty

Buyers looking for years of risk-free motoring might be put off by the relatively short three-year/60,000-mile warranty offered with the Grand C4 SpaceTourer. One of its rivals, the Toyota Prius+ MPV, comes with a much more attractive five-year/100,000-mile plan.
