New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe looks sharp in leaked images
Leaked images confirm that BMW’s smallest four-door, the 2 Series Gran Coupe, is getting an update
- BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe getting a facelift
- Styling shared with the new BMW 1 Series
- Date of official reveal still unknown
Images have surfaced online of the facelifted BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe prior to its official unveiling, giving us an unimpeded view of the new model. Judging by the leaked images, the updated car will wear the same styling as the recently facelifted BMW 1 Series, which is scheduled to reach customers in the UK this October. There’s no confirmed availability date for the new 2 Series Gran Coupe yet, but we expect it to be revealed in full before the end of the year.
What do I need to know about the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe?
Unlike the two-door BMW 2 Series, the 2 Series Gran Coupe shares its platform with the 1 Series hatchback. It’s no surprise then that the facelifted model wears near-identical styling to its hatchback twin, save for the saloon-shaped rear end. The car in these images, which first appeared on the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website, is a ‘long wheelbase’ model, which won’t be sold on our shores. However, its styling will be shared with UK-bound cars.
Up front, you’ll spot the new headlights and front grille arrangement from the new 1 Series. The car pictured is wearing M Sport trim bumpers with black-painted styling elements, and features redesigned tail-lights and a set of quad-exhaust pipes. The latter will be exclusive to the top-spec M235 variant, as with the new 1 Series.
There are no pictures of the interior of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe but it’s safe to assume that it will be carried over from the 1 Series, like the outgoing car. That would mean an entirely new dashboard and centre console layout, with BMW’s latest curved display panel. This consists of a 10.25-inch screen for the driver and a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, which is used for controlling everything from media to cabin temperature.
We expect the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe to share its engines with the new 1 Series, too. That would include two petrol models badged 220 and M235 – BMW has dropped the ‘i’ suffix from its petrol-powered cars. The 220 is expected to replace the entry-level 218i, coming with a 168bhp three-cylinder engine. The M235 – shown in these leaked images – will be designed for performance, getting a healthier 296bhp from its four-cylinder engine, along with four-wheel drive.
Diesel engines were dropped from the current 2 Series Gran Coupe in 2023 and there’s little hope of them returning for this update.
How much will the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe cost?
As this is an unofficial leak and not a BMW-sanctioned unveiling, we have little in the way of confirmed information, including price. Given that the current 2 Series Gran Coupe starts from just over £33,000, we wouldn’t be surprised if the new model costs nearer to £35,000. More details will be revealed following its official reveal, which is expected to happen later this year.
