New Jeep Avenger 4xe order books open with £31k starting price

New hybrid four-wheel drive system fitted to the Jeep Avenger, along with a rugged exterior package

  • Four-wheel drive hybrid system
  • Increased off-road capabilities
  • Starts from £31,000

Many small SUVs may look boxy and tough, but few are designed to actually head off-road – something that the new Jeep Avenger 4xe is here to change. As the latest model to join the Avenger lineup, the 4xe uses a petrol engine and two electric motors to combine for four-wheel drive, expanding upon the small SUV’s already impressive all-terrain talents.

Along with the new hybrid system, the Avenger 4xe gets its own unique styling package, complete with chunkier bumpers, green accents and new wheels and tyres. Jeep claims the upgrades aren’t just for show either – the 4xe is designed to enhance “off-road fun” and “all-weather drivability", appealing to customers who want something more capable than a typical small SUV.

The new model is now officially on sale, available in two trim levels, Upland and a special The North Face Edition named for the outdoorsy clothing and accessories brand. The latter is available in a run of 4,806 units, a reference to the height in metres of Mont Blanc, with a starting price of around £35,000 and PCP and PCH deals of £399 per month. The entry-level Upland meanwhile starts at just over £31,000.

What do I need to know about the Jeep Avenger 4xe?

The most important changes the ‘4xe’ badge brings are found under the skin. Beneath the bonnet is the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine shared with the petrol-powered Avenger and the Avenger e-Hybrid, but here it’s paired with two 28bhp electric motors. One assists the front wheels, while the other is fitted to the rear axle providing four-wheel drive. The system puts out a reasonable 134bhp through a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with Jeep claiming that 0-62mph can be achieved in 9.5 seconds – around half a second behind the electric Avenger.

The rear motor provides power at low speeds for added traction, but disengages above 56mph to improve fuel efficiency. The driver can select between four different driving modes – Auto, Snow, Sand & Mud, and Sport – each altering when and how the rear e-motor kicks in.

The off-road upgrades don’t stop there. Jeep has jacked up the Avenger 4xe’s ride height by 10mm, allowing it to ford through up to 400mm of water. The added height combined with new front and rear bumpers and a revised rear suspension design has improved the Avenger’s approach and departure angles, too, making it easier to tackle steep slopes. A set of standard-fit ‘mud and snow’ tyres complete the suite of upgrades.

Visually, the Avenger 4xe gets some unique touches, including rugged-looking bumpers, black alloy wheels, black roof rails and an optional bonnet decal. Inside it’s standard Avenger, other than the new waterproof material for the seats that can be easily washed.

Upland specification comes with a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, LED reflector headlamps, green accents, silver skid plates, and washable fabric interior trim. Other standard kit throughout the range includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, while adaptive cruise control, hill descent control, keyless start, and a 180-degree rear parking camera are also standard.

Spent the extra four grand on The North Face Edition and it swaps green accents for Summit Gold ones, black 17-inch alloys also with gold details, a gold-coloured skid plate, and both gold details and a The North Face logo on the anti-reflective bonnet decals. The interior goes hard on the Summit Gold details too, as well as topographic lines on the dashboard, more The North Face logos, custom floor mats with 3D mountain ranges, and elastic straps on the seat backs that resemble the straps on The North Face backpacks.

In addition, buyers of the special will get a heated windscreen, heated seats, navigation, and a hands-free tailgate. Less useful but nice all the same is a welcome pack that includes a tent, duffle bag, and water bottle.

How much does the Jeep Avenger 4xe cost and when can I buy one?

Order books are now open for the Avenger 4xe. In Upland trim you’ll pay £30,999, while The North Face Edition is £34,999. Jeep has highlighted a few finance deals on the special edition too, with a personal contract purchase agreement with a £5,999 deposit and 47 months of £399, while a personal contract hire deal matches that deposit and monthly payment schedule, also for 48 months in total. Both have an 8,000 annual mileage limit.
