Mercedes E-Class saloon - Reliability & safety (2016-2023)
Vast array of safety technology available makes the Mercedes E-Class one of the most advanced cars on the market
Mercedes enjoys an upmarket image and a reputation for quality, but its customers aren't always delighted with their cars. The brand's recent performance in our annual Driver Power satisfaction survey has been disappointing, however its results in 2021 and 2022 were decent. The E-Class itself also remains one of the safest cars on the road, thanks to its extensive list of safety features.
Mercedes E-Class reliability
The latest E-Class placed a slightly disappointing 68th out of 75 on our 2022 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. However, placing in the top 75 cars this year is still a pretty good result, even if the BMW 5 Series came a better 47th. Mercedes as a brand finished 23rd overall out of 29 manufacturers.
Safety
The Mercedes E-Class received the maximum five-star rating when it was independently tested by crash-safety experts Euro NCAP. A good result was expected, as the car is loaded with safety technology, including nine airbags as standard, as well as autonomous emergency braking and intelligent LED headlights.
The Driving Assist Plus pack (costing £1,700) adds Drive Pilot, Cross Traffic Alert to help avoid pulling out into the path of an oncoming vehicle and Evasive Steering Assist that can help steer around an obstacle. It also brings active blind-spot assistance and lane-keeping assistance, among other features. If a tow bar is fitted, Trailer Stability Assists becomes active from 40mph, and is able to detect a swinging trailer and reduce the oscillations, by automatically reducing engine torque and applying the brakes for individual wheels.
