New MG6 launches in China ahead of UK debut
New MG6 fastback features 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, promises top-notch connectivity and tech
MG has launched its new MG6 in China, promising its latest model will offer a youth-focused and technologically sophisticated addition to the mid-sized car market.
The MG6 will be a five-door car offering the practicality of a hatchback, while promising a dash of coupe style thanks to its tapering rear end. At the front a new ‘Star Rider’ grille is flanked by ‘London’ LED headlights, while the rear features LED running lights.
Inside, large horizontal air vents blend neatly into the dashboard’s central trim section, while round, turbine-style vents rest at each end of the cabin, calling to mind the Audi A3, among other cars. A large infotainment screen sits in the centre of the dashboard and MG promises this will offer the latest connectivity features.
MG says the 6 will boast “European high-end” stitching on its power-adjustable leather seats. An electronic parking brake, voice control, a digital dashboard screen and push-button start also feature.
Powering the MG6 will be a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 168bhp. Buyers are likely to be able to choose from a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, while the MG6 is expected to be front-wheel drive.
The MG6 is reported to be 469cm long, 184cm wide and 162cm high, placing it somewhere between the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes CLA, a car with which it shares comparable looks.
While China will get this MG6 first, it’s expected to go on sale in the UK in 2018. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but reports suggest MG is asking around £13,000 for it in China – although that’s likely to rise by the time the MG arrives on these shores.
