Official production numbers for the new car are yet to be revealed, but BMW has confirmed that availability will be ‘limited’. The US and Canada are set to receive 500 units of a 50 Jahre Edition based on the four-door M3, and we expect to see similar numbers here in Europe for the M4. Of course, this enhanced variant is likely to cost slightly more than the circa £80,000 asking price of the regular car.
There will be no technical changes for the 50 Jahre Edition so, like the standard M4, it uses a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 503bhp. This allows it to reach 62mph from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds, thanks to the added grip provided by BMW’s slick xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
Instead, the M4 50 Jahre Edition distinguishes itself with an exclusive exterior colour palette. Buyers can choose from an expanded range of new and returning paint options including Carbon Black, Macao Blue, Brands Hatch Grey, Imola Red and San Marino Blue. These are paired with a set of forged alloy wheels in either Orbit Grey or Gold Bronze, measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear.
Furthermore, BMW has scattered several model-specific badges and plaques around the car, just to ensure your 50 Jahre Edition is not mistaken for a standard M4. The car’s model name is emblazoned on the headrests of the standard carbon-fibre bucket seats and there is a plaque on the centre console, indicating the car’s build number.
Buyers can further customise their limited-run car with a host of BMW M Performance parts and accessories that are already on sale. These include a carbon-fibre rear spoiler and a set of carbon-fibre and titanium exhaust tips.
The year-long 50th birthday celebration of BMW ‘M’ is already well underway, with the brand recently announcing the new BMW M4 CSL - a hardcore, track-focused variant of the already sporty coupe. History will also be made later this year with the reveal of the BMW M3 Touring: the first-ever estate version of the long-running saloon. We can also expect the production version of the XM SUV concept to make an appearance, too.
