The electric Volkswagen ID.2 is to get a high-riding SUV version bringing an extra dose of practicality and road presence – here’s the first teaser

- Up to 280-mile range expected
You might not be able to see much, but this is the first official teaser of the upcoming Volkswagen ID.2 SUV. The German marque has been hard at work on a new electric ID.2 hatchback model set to fill the gap at the bottom of its range below the ID.3 – now we have our first glimpse of the ID.2 SUV variant, which should add a touch of practicality and a higher ride height.
What is the VW ID.2 SUV?
The VW ID.2 SUV will be sold alongside the regular ID.2 hatchback as a chunkier, more practical alternative. Designed to serve as the new entry-point to VW’s electric SUV range, the ID.2 SUV should enter production in 2026. Before then however, we expect Volkswagen to show off a concept car called the ID.2all SUV, which should provide a far clearer preview of the production car than this teaser image.
What we can see from the teaser is the ID.2 SUV’s silhouette, which appears to closely resemble that of the ID.2all hatchback concept car we saw earlier this year. There are short overhangs, typical of VW’s electric ID lineup, as well as slim LED headlights similar in shape to the ones found on the ID.2all. Towards the rear of the car, we can see what appear to be three slats – a similar motif as used on the VW ID. Buzz.
Using what we know so far about the ID.2 SUV, our exclusive render shows how the production version might look. The polo-sized supermini could get SUV-style side cladding and a higher stance making it a little more capable over rough ground, plus roof bars allowing for extra practicality.
It’s not a look completely new to the brand, with Volkswagen having previously released crossover versions of the Polo called the Polo Dune and Polo Cross – but this time it’s been reinvented for the electric age, with the ID.2 and its SUV variant likely to be powered by a 38kWh or 58kWh battery good for up to 280 miles of range on a charge. We’d also expect 125kWh DC rapid charging as standard.

As seen on the Volkswagen ID.2all concept’s interior, the pint-sized SUV should also get large physical controls for heating and ventilation thanks to CEO Thomas Schäfer’s push to improve the user experience of the brand’s cars. Many of its recent models have been criticised for hiding access to too many in-car functions behind a touchscreen or fiddly touch-sensitive controls.
How much will the ID.2 SUV cost?
Given the added desirability and practicality of SUVs, we’d expect the Volkswagen ID.2 SUV to cost a little more than the standard ID.2 hatchback. Volkswagen has set a target price for the ID.2 of around £20,000 in the pursuit of further democratising EVs for the masses. Given inflation and rising costs, however, it’s yet to be seen whether the brand will be able to fulfil that promise, so we’d expect it to cost a little more still when it goes on sale.
