Renault Captur review – Reliability & safety
"The Renault Captur has a four-star safety rating, and customer satisfaction could be better"
The Renault Captur received a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP when it was tested towards the end of 2019. Renault has previously received mixed reviews in terms of reliability, but not many Captur owners have encountered problems thus far. The Captur came in a middling 34th place out of the top 75 cars overall in the 2023 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, although reliability was rated one of its strong suits. It didn’t chart on the 2024 edition, however.
Renault Captur reliability
The Captur is loaded with new components and technology, but it seems to all work as it should, as the Captur was rated highly for reliability in 2023’s Driver Power survey, coming 17th in this category but 34th out of the 75 top models in the rankings overall.
Disappointingly, Renault itself came 28th out of 32 brands in our 2024 Driver Power survey, and a middling 24.4% of owners reported a fault with their car in the first year of ownership, which was about average. That performance represents just a one-place improvement from 2023, but Renault owners gave strong results for low running costs, affordable maintenance and reasonable tax and insurance.
Safety
Although the pre-facelift Renault Captur received a full five-star safety rating when it was tested, Euro NCAP has since put it through another test for the facelifted version and it got just four stars. It’s because Euro NCAP made its testing criteria more stringent within that time. As a result, the Captur scored 76% and 80% in the Adult and Child Occupant protection categories, respectively. In terms of safety towards vulnerable road users, the Captur scored 76%, while it got just 69% for its suite of safety assistance systems.
Available safety kit includes a 360-degree camera view, a Highway and Traffic Jam Companion that can help drive the car in certain situations, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition. The Captur also has updated autonomous emergency braking that can spot cyclists and pedestrians.
