Generally very good. t has some electrical faults that have been annoying and if it wasn't for the warranty expensive. It handles very well for a big car, but with a heavy bodyu and big engine it is not very fuel efficient. The paint does not seem to be very thick for an off road, utility/family car so it scratches easily.

Excellent performance from a big 4 x 4. Suits my needs, has style and excellent build quality. Nothing else really comes close to it in the big 4 x 4 market.

Its a great handling, fast, reasonably riding, extremely practical, diesel-guzzling suv. If bmw sort out the fuel economy it would be a completely Faultless car.

A great motorway car with an excellent driving position sat up high however the size of the car has been problematic in city centre car parks. Overall a fine driving, reliable car and have just ordered another bmw but this time a more fuel efficient 520 saloon.

Great car. always wanted a BMW and this was first one I owned. it certainly lives up to BMW reputation. Bought it 1 year old and had no reliability issues with it over that time. It uses run flat tyres which can be a bit pricey. It goes like a rocket and I drive it quite hard and am not precious about my cars. I had a Jeep overland before and this handled much beeter in the snow but then I do have 21" tyres on this.

This is a great SUV. Its big but its amazing on short or long journeys. This is our 2nd X5 and we love the diesel version. We had a 4.4 petrolversion previously. It is a joy to pull a boat. Only issues we had were the electric rear door closing but BMW fixed under warranty. We got the Exec seats and had some electrical issues and were fixed under warranty as was one main head light. Am looking at the new one and still believe they are the best. Had a test on the Cayenne (one week) that I also liked but believe that the BMW is an all round superior car!

Very good car for long journeys, motorways, and adverse weather conditions, not so good for local around town, bulky to park. boot space not good for such a large car. wide tyres and weight prone to punctures from screws, nails, etc, and changing wheel difficult. Newly imposed expensive road tax will penalise.

Fabulous comfort and ride, wonderful to drive. However very expensive to maintain and even small niggling faults are very costly. Due to this, will look around before upgrading to the newer model.

I knew i wanted a x5 4.8is after hearing one go past in my evo 8. All i can say is the car is fantastic, it is a perfect balance between performance and economy. The fuel consuption is double what the evo was (albeit thats not difficult) and the other half loves driving it. It can cover serious ground on the motorway qhilst still being very refined and comfortable (something the evo could never do). All in all i love everything about it, the way it surges of the lights, the way it looks and lastly the noise which sounds like someone beating up the devil...perfect machine

Best car i have owned, a good all rounder, it's that good i pick up my new one on march 1st 2011, £70000, but you do get what you pay for, used to be a ford man, now having owned a bmw there is no comparison, what i have learned is fords are well over priced for what you pay

April 2014: An explosive fire started in our BMW X5 a few minutes after my wife and two kids switched of the engine and left the car. The movie was taken a minute from the fire started, the car was totally flashed over in 10 minutes. Worst of all is that the fire was the second in a row, just a few kilometres after the car was returned back from the BMW authorized workshop due to fire in the engine, at that time caused by emission system and broken exhaust pipe at the throttle. Top management at BMW group of Sweden was contacted the day after the second fire, the case is still unsolved and my family has not got a final response from BMW a the time of 21. June 2014 My family has had BMW since beginning of 2000s, we thought we invested in quality and safety according to the premium brand BMW considered to be - unfortunately we were wrong...

Despite the problems with the optional extra sunroof and electric steering wheel adjustment - still happy with car. Our other x5, with no added options and of similiar age and model has no problems.

Without doubt the best luxury car in the world. Far better than an s class, range rover or a8 - i have tried them all. Exceptional handling, top build quality, discrete and very quick. Expensive to buy and run but the best things in life are never cheap.

Extremely reliable, and surprisingly reasonable to service and run. It has just about the same servicing cost as my wife's honda jazz! The car is most reassuring to drive during the cold snowy / icy weather we have had recently. My nest car will be a repeat or perhaps the new bmw x3.

The best 4x4 ever, beautiful to look at, spectacular to drive, handles excellent. A minor disappointment in the finish as i can hear small vibration on the door, did not have time to go to the dealer to get this rectified. I put down the minor disappointment to being made in us of a. My other car is a 3 series and have owned it from new for 7 years with not even a single glitch.

Be fine if bmw would actually acknowledge that the zf6speed auto has a serious fault across many owners and paid towards repairs. Mine went at under 42,000 miles. If that isn't premature i don't know what is and yet bmw walked away. Cheers guys, that went down really well. And the bill? That'll be £10,000!! No fix, just replace!!

Have loved my black beauty, no problems at all bougnt it from a BMW dealer with 30,000 km also bought the extended warranty but haven't needed it. I do however get it serviced every ten thousand kilometres and I've been told that's the secret to trouble free diesel motoring. I don't take it to the dealer but to a small owner operated garage and that keeps the cost down. Due to change in twelve months. Will either choose another X5 or maybe a Range Rover Sport this time.

NEVER ever buy a diesel. Have had the SUV for 14 months and have visited the BMW dealer 8 times. Many issues with EGR valves and carbon build up. Worst truck ever!

It has done 80000 miles but has cost me a lot of money new radiotor. New part for computer as the warning lights keep coming on. Parking sensors keep breaking and are unreliable

Absolutely fantastic car. Brilliant to drive, albeit a little firm. Always felt safe and secure. Really disappointed about the reliabiliy, though. Dodgy electrics, particularly excessive battery discharge, and a sunroof tha wouldn't shut. Not what you expect on a year old car that cost over £50,000 when new.

Great car to drive, much more modern feeling than similar years RR sport or RR. Quick, comfortable and has road presence in abundance. No complaints from me, in fact a big thumbs up.

Looks great and comfortable to drive. That's where all good things about the X5 stop. Had to have battery and brake pads replaced after a yr. Tyres replaced after 2 yrs, now control module has to be replaced. Number of other little issues not worth mentioning, but costing an arm and a leg. Motorline BMW (Dealership) that services the car always seems to find faults that urgently require fixing... Just cancelled my latest order for an X5 for late 2014.

I love my Beema. This car has the perfect mix of driver dynamics and practicality. For a car that is quite heavy, it handles well around corners and has plenty of feel in the steering. The interior, even though it is starting to show its age compared to new cars, is comfortable, practical and large enough for my three teenage children. I love the powerful and the delivery of power from the twin turbo diesel engine and it shows very good fuel economy for an SUV. I definitely recommend getting the park sensors and twin sunroof as options and the twin turbo diesel as the engine. The ride can be a bit bumpy, but this can be fixed by selecting the smallest wheels and avoiding the 20s.

Absolutely love this car. Ride is amazing - quiet, smooth, comfortable. There is plenty of room inside for 5 adults to be comfy and although I haven't used the extra 2 seats in the rear it is nice to know they are available. The performance is very impressive for a car of this size - this is the twin turbo 286bhp model and it is incredibly quick in sport mode, and really drives more like a car than a pick up. Automatic gearbox is good on the whole but when pushing the car a bit in sport mode it is really superb. Better than some german sportscars i have driven. Fuel economy is ok - around town 24-26mpg, on the motorway 34 is achievable around 75 mph, each mph extra seems to cost an MPG tho. My experience of BMW service (Park Lane - Battersea branch) has been very positive, prices seem fair and service is excellent. Overall i am delighted with this car and would recommend it.

Love it to bits. I'm wary of needing major parts as the expense would be eye-watering so i am unbending about servicing. I would never cut corners to save a few pounds now as i'm certain it would bite me later. In 80k miles all has needed is a minor electrical to the rear lights, new tyres and a nav disk update.

Pluses - good build, good looks, large, quite fast and pretty quiet, comfortable and good for towing (which is why i bought it) Minuses - expensive to service, not particularly economical, not a great 4-wheel drive, horribly expensive and run-flat tyres, high road tax

Great car but reliability is an issue and worse bmw know there are problems but just will not admit it. A quick check of the internet reveals serious gearbox issues - which i have now suffered from and it took 6 months to fix! Bmw didn't care. The x5 drives well and handles well, but it has lots of sill little faults which a premium car should never have.

Very nice car to drive - effortless. A nice mix of power & economy. Does everything a family needs & is very surefooted in bad weather. Expensive once the options are ticked. Buy a good one & it's great. We bought from franchise dealer & got warranty, free servicing & gap insurance thrown in because they had a 'sales event' on.

Having run my previous x5 3.0d for 6 years, i had no hesitation in changing it for a 40d m-sport twin turbo ... Better performance, quicker 0-60, more economical (38mpg) and below 200 co2 ... + loads more toys!
