BMW X6 SUV - Reliability & safety

BMW has an impressive reputation for its engineering and technology but owners weren’t bowled over in our most recent Driver Power survey. That could be because cars like the X6 are very complex, featuring a myriad of electrical systems and components.

Despite its models feeling tough and beautifully designed, parent company BMW was only placed 21st out of 32 manufacturers in our 2023 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey. 22% of customers told us they had reported at least one fault in the first year, although most of them were not of the type to leave you stranded at the roadside.

Neither the BMW X6 or its nearest rivals made our list of the top 75 cars to own, so it's hard to judge the model specifically, though other than the quirky i3 electric car, the highest-placed BMWs in the 2023 survey were the most recent 3-series and 5-series, back to back in 46th and 47th positions (out of 75).

Safety

The BMW X6 is fitted with autonomous emergency braking that first alerts the driver when an object, pedestrian or cyclist is detected in the car's path. As an option, active cruise control is also offered, with the ability to bring the car to a halt and set off again within 30 seconds. Lane change assistant also makes swapping lanes on the motorway less stressful, with a simple nudge of the indicator stalk steering the car into the adjacent lane when it's safe to do so.
