Hyundai i20 hatchback (2009-2015): owner reviews

"The Hyundai i20 is a decent choice if you’re after a solidly built, well equipped and good-value hatchback. However, its design and driving experience let it down."

Clutch keeps slipping already, replaced one clutch and new one does the same intermittently. In recent heavy rain, water ingress onto dashboard. Drives poorly - not a driver's car - but got all the gadgets, which my wife likes. Also been back 3 times for petrol cap not opening.

The worst car I have ever bought - stay well away, problems from day one. Purchased at 9 months old 10K miles. Bad points - Within 2 weeks of owning I had problems opening the drivers door, this happened twice. Shortly after this the steering wheel started peeling, I must say after the steering wheel has been changed the problem has not returned... yet. Then the seats become very uncomfortable (a metal rod at the base of the seat), even after the uprated seat foam from the manufacturer the problem still continues so I think a nice fluffy cushion should do the trick. Diesel leaking in the engine oil, who knows if the problem will ever be fixed. Now after the car becoming 2 years old the tailgate has started rusting badly below the rear window. Make sure the perforation book is stamped at 12 months or the rust is not under warranty as I have now found out to my cost (due to the dealership failing to mention this). Fuel economy is not what was stated, I get an average of 55-60mpg that's with the aid of new A/B rating tyres fitted and driving very carefully. The Bluetooth telephone connectivity is of a very bad design and I don't bother using it as it doesn't appear to work with my Blackberry. Good points - The door mirrors fold away with the touch of a button. Headlight have a good range/visibility. Spacious cabin. Free road tax. Disc brakes on all 4 wheels. My advice, spend a bit more money and go for a different manufacturer, I certainly will next time. Bye.

I bought this as my first new car based on the amazing Hyundai mpg figure over 80mpg and over 90mpg combined. In 5, 000 miles it has only averaged 59mpg (best 67, worst 47), costing me an extra £150 in fuel. I drive very economically, so I am very disappointed. Almost all miles are extra urban, and I don't exceed 56mph! It is also not that fun to drive. On the plus side it has the lightest power steering and very bright headlights. The ISG doesn't always work. The ipod connector would be better if you could navigate your ipods own controls, rather than through the cars stereo buttons. I hope Hyundai will take the car back in and improve the fuel efficiency.

Clutch not going into reverse immediately. Told by dealership to go into fifth and then to reverse! Or foot off clutch and try again. I am female — of course I wouldn't have any idea that a clutch should last longer than five months! Car good but worried about what is ahead with clutch and dealership help.

Having just over 6,000Km on the clock, I'm really disappointed with the fuel economy of the car despite other minor issues which I can live with, like noises in the steering wheel and noise in the back electric window. Hyundai service team where not able to solve the steering issue, and thought it is not worth continuing to waste time trying to solve the issue unless it is life threatening. Months back there have been an (unofficial recall) and a firmware update was applied. They were quite reserved to disclose any information about the update and was told that it is a must, refrain from doing it will void your warranty! When I insisted for further info, they said that there were reports while driving the engine will stall and loose power. So being a software issue, its probably an ECU problem. Before this, the eco was better (38-40MPG), Using it for mainly for city driving no more than 10Km daily except for weekends. Of course there are many variables when speaking about economy like driving style. I don't keep pushing it on low gears and often apply the 5th gear while it reaches 50-55Km/hr without struggling the engine. So in my point of view I'm trying my best to achieve the best economy possible with this car but it has let me down! I used to own a Suzuki jimny 1998 1.3 (4x4) and used to give 32-34MPG. Hyundai having newer technology and suppose to be more refined for eco, so I expected at least 40MPG at least. But nowhere close to its claimed 56MPG! Unfortunately i cant complain with Hyundai service team on this issue because it has lot of variables and so you are told that all is okay with the car... Im very curious to give it a run on a motor way someday with the same speed for 30min.

The electrical problem was only a loose fuse and fixed in 10 mins. Nice styling and very well equiped, economical with more performance than expected. still pleased with it after almost 2 yrs and considering another car from hyundai (have two cars) plenty of room for its size both front and back. I feel that i got more than expected in this car.

I bought this car when it was 2 years old with 12.000 miles on it for the first 3 years it ran fine with nothing more than needing a new battery. but the last 2 years despite it still having only covered 29,000 miles it's had a new clutch – as an ex taxi driver I'm used to getting 100000 out of a clutch. Then the timing chain started rattling like a diesel, a £600 job. The radio cd player packed up, the wiper motor went and today the passenger side door won't (a fault with the central locking actuator being seized). I can't see this car making it to 50 thousand miles despite regular servicing, it's by far the worst car I have ever owned.

This was a courtesy car from Hyundai and I found for the money this is way better than the fiesta if you want a petrol engine. It is like a smaller version of the i30 which drives not much different than the 1.6diesel but pick up a tad slower. I got over 60mpg over 50 miles I had that day on motorway, country roads and town driving. It was a 3 door car which the only downside was the rear seats, no leg room to stretch at all and only good for children, perfect for two adults at the front though. It has a 5 speed gearbox but don't let that put you off, and the suspension is very smooth. Test drive one and see for yourself if you want a smooth drive and economy with a reliable record and good for either just passed your driving test or older people who want a decent small car for getting about, Try this.

This is my first car after passing my test and yes it is a good looking car. Pros- spacious inside although ugly plastic dash, supportive comfy seats, smooth gears. Con- the bite is difficult to reach so I over rev or stall (never stalled in car when learning to drive) and it is so light and floaty that I don't fell safe over 50 mph as it bobbles along at speed. I cannot gel with this car after 6 months and am going to buy a Fiesta.

Nice car, improved shape, bit of a bumpy ride on roads that are not perfect (which most are not!). Dashboard is a bit plasticy and creeks when its cold and you put the heater on to warm the car up. I'm a bit disappointed that the i20 does not have a top of the range model like they did with the getz as i bought a new car and had to have lots of extras added to the car. I now have a creeking sunroof. Things like a sunroof should be included in the top of the range model.

Exceeded my expecations for a budget manufacturer, very well specified and as good as the market leaders but £3k cheaper.

Very good - easy to handle and park. Easy to drive long distances and in country lanes. The only real problem i've had is the gearbox which is different from my old car and not as easy - i'm not as young as i was! I test drove the 1.2 and ordered a 1.4 and they're different, but i'm used to it now.

It's like pleasure driving i20 at 130kmph No vibs, feel like flying...except am not sure about braking at that speed, as i haven't applied.... Interior is very good, very neatly arranged compartments...like entering a luxury hotel... And finally for premium hatcback segment, this is definitely the king of cars.... Thanks for the oppurtunity to express my romance towards my car, i20. Hari India Splendorhari@gmail.com

I bought this car second hand with extremely low mileage of 5,000 after 3 years. It has proved very reliable with only the abs sensors on both rear wheels going wrong. That is until the warranty ran out! Then I noticed recently some rust spots under the rear windscreen so I took it back to the dealer as it comes with a 10 year anti perforation warranty only to be told that the rust has been caused by the glass moving and therefore scratching the paint, allowing the rust to form. Anti perforation only covers rust from inside the paint. My initial 5 year warranty had run out 4 months ago otherwise it would have been covered. Now I am left with a rusty back window and no help from Hyundai who just keep pointing at the fact that my warranty ran out 4 months ago. I have seen other reviews about rust along the bottom edge of the glass but you must be aware that it must be reported inside 5 years.

Bought this car new under the scrappage scheme. It's done a fairly low 37k miles. Never had any problems with it apart from: - the handbrake had a lot of travel when we first had it but the dealer fixed that. It's fairly long travel still but never failed an MOT on it. - the accelerator sticks. I never even noticed this until my son started learning to drive. Looking online it's fairly common and just need the throttle cable greased. I measured mpg twice. The first was 49mpg driving 60-70 on the M4 in rush hour and the second about 45mpg being used more in town. The seats are uncomfortably hard. The ride is either firm or uncomfortable depending on whether you're enjoying the drive and the front valance on the bumper is very low and easy to hit on a curb when parking. The engine needs revving to get to the power. It is quite fast to accelerate but doesn't feel like it. Once it was 5 years old I did my own servicing as I'm intending to keep the car till it goes to the scrap yard. It is the easiest car to change the oil and filter on - the filter is next to the drain on the sump right at the front (though because of the low front you have to jack it up or put in on a shallow ramp as I do). The engine looks small in the bay and I reckon this would give good access to most parts.

Having regularly taken the car to a Hyindai dealer for servicing and having complained repeatedly of excessive black smoke from the exhaust and a very poor return on MPG compared to the figure quoted, I can quite confidently report that this is the worst service and the worst experience I have had in over 35 years of driving. The garage initially refused to believe any of my reports. Customer Services asked me to report the problem to roadside assistance. I eventually called out the AA as I was so concerned about the car. The AA mechanic was excellent and immediately towed the car to the garage to tell them just how severe the car's issues were. Only then was any action taken. Nine weeks later, I am still without my car. I have no proper information about what is happening. I ring Customer Services regularly and have spoken to a different person every time. They never ring me. The garage only rings if I've rung them first. They tried to return the car 5 weeks ago and it wouldn't even drive off the forecourt. They accepted that there was "another problem" and have since told us they are replacing a significant portion of the engine. It's nothing short of disgusting. We bought a new car as we wanted reliable motoring; I do a lot of motorway driving. I am very worried that the car will never be properly fit and that the problems I will inherit from these original faults will result in issues not covered by warranty. The engine has always made a lot of noise and driving has never been smooth. I would have been better off buying a Trabant or even a tandem bicycle.

What a fantastic little car! I had this second hand; although it wasn't used much before we had it. This is my first car after passing my test (I also learnt to drive in this a couple of times), and it is so nice to drive! One major thing that I love is that it is a very forgiving car - me only recently passing I still make mistakes going 15mph uphill in 3rd but it has never let me down! It's very reliable and I feel very safe and secure in it. The design inside has blue seats (my car is blue) which adds a little character. It has many gadgets such as sunroof, electric windows, heated exterior mirrors, radio/CD player and all your standard gear. A plus with this what I find is that you can have the radio on but there is a 'dark' button, which you click and it turns the radio screen black but it still keeps the radio/cd playing and usable - it gets rids of the glare/distraction that it may cause to some people. The boot is not the biggest, but my parents can still get the shopping in! But the back seats do fold down if extra space is required. It is a comfy car to drive. We brought it for a reasonable price - I think it was £6000 (part exchange though) but they are reasonably priced cars. It is very economical - I put £40 in and that lasts me a month or a little over - I travel 20 minutes to work every weekend and my parents have it in the week to commute to work, plus extra shopping/social trips. I would DEFINITELY recommend this car, it's value for money. It comes in a range of lovely colours suited to everyone.

Very reliable little workhorse. Well equipped and reasonably economical. Cheap insurance and road tax. Not the most comfortable car ever but adequate for the daily commute. The downside of this car has been niggly problems. Poor paintwork which chips easily. Remedied by a warranty re spray after arguing with dealership.. Leaking gearbox fixed under warranty. New sun visors replaced under warranty. The oil leak has returned and the radio regularly loses channels. Hoping for more warranty repairs on next service. Warranty expires next year !!!!

After studying all the opposition we bought the i20, an ex-demonstrator, due to it's high amount of standard equipment, safety features and great price. According to What Car it's residual 3 yr value beats the Fiesta and Corsa. We have not been disappointed. I sold my Merc. SL500 and downsized to allow my teenage daughter to also use the car and the insurance is very low, the car is extremely comfortable on both short and long distance. We have had no issues with the car and if I was to "nit pick" the tyres do make a bit of road noise so would probably change the brand when they need replacing. I cannot understand the people who have left "not recommend" remarks after giving 5 and 4 star reviews - something not right there!!
