Lexus RX SUV (2010-2015): owner reviews

"Comfortable, smooth and well equipped, the hybrid-engined Lexus RX 450h is a top luxury 4x4 that's reliable to boot. It's quite expensive though."

Lovely car, smooth to drive. You need to drive very carefully to achieve a reasonable mpg, but co2 emmisions declared are good. Slightly boring to drive if anything and doesnt feel as involving as my previous bmw. Overall maybe i have hot a certain age and appreciate different things in life as this is just a straightforward unassuming and cossseting car to own..

1. The interior of the vehicle was damaged from new when we collected it (lexus cardiff). It took lexus months - of me chasing - to get the damaged part replaced. 2. When lexus bristol replaced the damaged part, the lexus mechanic damaged another interior panel (door). Lexus had the vehicle back – but returned the vehicle having just applied a lump of black glue to the damaged door panel. Lexus then change the panel - but fitted another damaged panel. When we complained, the lexus (bristol) service manager told me i should come and stand over the mechanic to check his work! I informed the service manager that that was his job! Lexus then ordered a new door panel - i took the car in yet again - but the panel turned out to be the wrong colour. Lexus then order another panel - which when it arrived was also damaged - due (lexus bristol stated) to the packaging system being flawed. Lexus bristol said they would inform lexus of the packaging damaging panels - and order another panel. I never heard from them again! 3. The reversing lights are completely useless - and dangerous. I reported this design fault to lexus - never heard anything about it again. 4. The reversing camera display dims at night when the lights are on - so making the reversing camera picture very poor - with the combination of useless reversing lights - making it impossible to see safely when reversing. I informed lexus of this design fault – but lexus said there is nothing they can do about it. 5. I complained to lexus at the london motor show - and they said they would investigate it and get back to me. I never heard from them again, and had to chase them up months later. Lexus still did not address the issues raised. 6. The headlamp unit suffered from water ingress. Replaced under warranty. 7. The battery kept going flat - making it impossible to start the vehicle. The rac man stated that this was his biggest call out fault - lexus batteries going flat. We called out the rac several times. Eventually, lexus replaced the battery under warranty. The lexus park lane chap who collected the vehicle stated that lexus had a problem with the batteries. However, we were never certain that out car would actually start from one day to the next (or on return from holiday) – because the battery could go flat at any time - which was very worrying. 8. Rattles and squeaks developed in the rear seating – which became persistent. 9. A rear speaker had to be replaced due to loud buzzing. 10. The lexus rx400h (as with other toyota/lexus models) has a serious inherent - and potentially lethal - brake failure fault. Over bumpy surfaces (i.e. most of the uk) and when turning into corners, the brake system automatically releases braking pressure (causing the driver to sense a relative surge of acceleration), and then automatically re-applied brake pressure – with no change in input by the driver. This stomach-churning experience happened intermittently with our vehicle, and then became a persistent fault at about 28,000 miles. Other owners report the same fault. Lexus immediately issued a disclaimer stating that no uk vehicle have any brake problems, and told us to keep driving the vehicle. Lexus then told me it would be weeks before they could look at the vehicle. After a firm reference to their contract under warranty, lexus told me to drive the vehicle into the dealer (but no courtesy car). I repeatedly informed lexus that i would not drive the vehicle on the public highway. Lexus eventually collected the vehicle (no courtesy car). After a couple of days lexus tried to return the vehicle – without any reference to the serious brake fault. Then lexus stated there was no fault with the vehicle. Lexus then repeatedly attempted to get me to drive the vehicle. We complained to lexus financial services (legal owners of the vehicle). Lexus then stated that a regional service manager would look at the vehicle – but insisted that i drive the vehicle. Then insisted that i sit in the vehicle as a passenger. When i refused to be liable due to the potentially lethal brake failure fault on the public highway, lexus did not bother getting their regional service manager to inspect the vehicle. Lexus then moved the vehicle from london to a location in surrey. Since 14 april 2010, we have not had the use of a vehicle. Lexus financial services have had the vehicle for over four months. When we stated that we would make a complaint to the financial ombudsman, lexus financial services firstly informed us that we would have to wait eight weeks before we could submit a complaint to the ombudsman. Lexus financial services then wrote again and stated that we could not submit a complaint to the ombudsman. Lexus financial services informed us that their ‘offer of settlement’ was for them to sell the vehicle and for us to be liable for the ‘shortfall’ and costs – and falsely alleged that their offer constitute a ‘part 36 offer’ which we had to accept or reject within a legal timeframe. Lexus took two months to suggest that they might carry out an ‘independent’ ‘inspection’. Lexus then informed us that they would provide names of a selection of inspectors for us to choose from – but never provided these details. Lexus informed us - another two months later – that they were arranging an ‘independent inspection’ to be carried out. But lexus financial services only arranged for this ‘inspection’ to be carried out right at the end of the (3-year) term of the financial agreement. The ‘report’ from the ‘independent inspector’ showed that the ‘inspection’ had been inadequate and flawed. The ‘inspector’ stated that the brake system had not been worked – when in fact lexus had previously informed us that they had worked on the brake system. The ‘inspector’ only drove the vehicle for ‘5 miles’ and only at speeds below ‘40mph’. The ‘report’ showed that the ‘inspector’ had not even been informed of the particulars of the brake failure fault. Nevertheless, immediately on completion of the ‘report’, lexus then demanded we withdraw our claim that there was a brake failure fault, and demanded that we settle the balance of the finance, and either buy the vehicle outright, or trade the vehicle in for another lexus (!), Or return the vehicle. Lexus threatened to charge us for ‘storage costs’ – having had the vehicle for over four months. Lexus financial services wrote another concurrent threatening letter demanding we pay the outstanding balance of payments – which we had stopped when lexus financial services had deprived us of the use of a vehicle. In that letter, lexus financial services alleged that they would take steps to ‘recover the vehicle’ – despite the fact that they had been in possession of the vehicle from over four months – and despite the fact that we had not seen the vehicle since 14 april 2010. Lexus financial services lexus even threatened to sell our belongings that were in the vehicle when lexus financial services took the vehicle to surrey – and to use the money from the sale to off-set any costs they would charge us. After i threatened legal action, lexus financial services told us we could collect our belongings from surrey or from lexus park lane (knowing that we had not had the use of a vehicle for over four months). We requested that lexus financial services return our belongings to our home address in order not to inconvenience us even further – they returned our belongings this week (13 october 2010).

I am not quite sure why carbuyer have given this car such a low score? Without doubt this has been the best most reliable car we have ever owned. The car has now done over 150k and I've done the majority of the miles and in that time it's has nothing but new tyres, discs and pads. Oh yes, new brake calipers which I believe can be a problem withem sticking but wasn't too expensive to repair. The car never misses a beat and during the bad weather a couple of years ago drove no problem through one of the worst snow blizzards I have ever experienced over the Welsh mountains. MPG isn't the best, averaging for us around 30-32mpg and that's mostly motorway. But the car is faster than most of this size with no problems overtaking anything in its way! The fuel tank isn't very big and does require frequent trips to the petrol station. Used every single day for a long commute to work but the ride is very comfortable, lovely soft leather seats. Time for a newer car now and guess what I want? Yes, another RX.

Drives the length of the country in total comfort, just wish it could do it on one tank of petrol! From glasgow to london normally have to get a top-up at northampton, and carlisle on way home. Bought from car shop in northampton, i had seen it on the internet but salesman told me didnt have it; he kept trying to convince me about other cars but when i was ready to walk he caved in and went and got it. Half an hour later she was mine. Only thing "wrong" is boot is a little shallow; just had a recall letter from lexus to take it in to have brake master cylinder seal changed. Superb car - will only be exchanging for a diesel range rover sport; may convert rx to lpg in the meantime.

We have had them all! Range Rovers...we still have our two year old one...Discoveries, BMW X5, Jeeps, Aston Martins....we have had a new one just delivered, and a host of others. The Lexus both this 450 and our earlier 400 have been simply exemplary. Not a single fault in six years. Refined, quiet, very economical and a joyful relaxing drive. As an experiment we dawdled for 100 miles with the traffic to see if we really could get the claimed mpg.........yup,55.1! It tows our loaded two ton trailer with no problems and still does more mpg than our diesel Discoveries did running solo! The head up display is excellent and is a must on future buys. The two rear dvd players are a boon with kids and great when the driver needs a break on really long trips. Support is hard to evaluate as it has only been servicing but that has been most efficient and decent value. Will we buy more of these excellent cars? You bet we will.

Very practical, comfortable and well-equipped. Not as economical as i'd hoped for a hybrid!

2nd one we have had, love it and will probably have another the same. When running on battery it is very quiet and can confuse pedestrians.

The lexus promises alot and the brand is built up to a premium contender. Mercedes, bmw and audi are way ahead. Very disappointed to have had so many problems with jd power Topping vehicle and to be snubbed by the uk importer For known faults is very short sighted. Soon to be part exchanged for a mercedes!

Does what it says on the tin, fuel economy relies on the batteries being charged, too many short journeys drain the batteries and increase fuel consumption.

The car is as expected, i bought a lexus on the basis of being a reliable quality make. The franchise dealers let the marque down. I have used 2 so far & am very disappointed with their so called customer service.
