Mazda CX-5 SUV (2012-2017): owner reviews

"The Mazda CX-5 SUV is such a good all-rounder, it’s hard to find much to criticise. Handling, running costs, style and value are all strong points"

I had an issue with the internal heater matrix blocked when we first had the car so would not heat the interior. The dealer flushed it through which cured the problem. It's had absolutely no issues since. It drives lovely, no problems at all in 3 years. My only complaint is that service costs seem high. If you can live with the service cost though it is one of the best SUVs.

Great car for 3 years then a major problem as soon as it was out of warranty. Mazda is blaming the issue on using synthetic 5w30 rather than semi-synthetic 5w30 oil (even though handbook doesn't specify which). On further investigation it is a known problem with the turbo camshaft on this model built up to September 2013. Mazda customer care completely disinterested and the bill from Mazda is now into thousands of pounds to repair. I would avoid at all costs.

I would not recommend Mazda due to the fact that Mazda do not care about customers and their dealers do not know about the cars. I have an S-Lux without SatNav, as I was told by the dealer that SatNav versions take 14 weeks, I was also told by another dealer that it is impossible for me to have a Mazda without a SatNav as you cannot purchase them without SatNavs?! So....... 1. S-Lux with Satnav 14 weeks delivery = wrong 2. S-Lux cannot be purchased without Satnav = wrong 3. Dealer asked for Satnav upgrade cost - could not answer as the engineer was on holiday for 2 weeks. 4. Another dealer asked - quoted £1,000 - £2,000 5. Another dealer advised £958 including fitting costs 6. Emailed Mazda asking for clarification. 7. Emailed Mazda asking why they have not responded to my enquiry. 8. Emailed Mazda to complain that they have ignored 2 emails. 9. Response from Mazda thanking me for my complaint! 10. Visit to dealer to find out Satnav can be activated by purchasing a SIM card for £398 + VAT (£480.00) 11. Telephone call with a senior Mazda Manager to discuss dealer quoting £1,000+ for a £480.00 sim card - promised a call back. 12. 3 weeks later called another Mazda dealer who quoted £1,200 13. No call back from Senior Manager - several messages left. 14. Email to Mazda head office advising them that Mazda are either incompetent or the dealers are fraudulent. 15. Same person from Mazda called back - no interest in complaint again - advised SIM cost as over £580 + fitting! (for a sim card!) This is my second Mazda CX-5 and I would never by another Mazda due to the fact that Mazda do not care about customers (so do not have a customer care department!) and that the dealers are fraudulent in their costs on upgrades. Be very careful!

I don't know what Mazda do to make their test drive CX5s so quiet because the road noise and tyre rumble coming into the cabin of my brand new CX5 is just unbelievably bad. I just can't believe no one else has complained about the din, as it's scarcely believable that a new car should generate this much tyre rumble. Mazda dealer's view is total disinterest, as they claim they all make that noise! Asked if they would check the door seals and they refused point blank. First and last Mazda. Never again. Shame because it does drive quite nicely. Just have lots of paracetamol to hand though.

Poor MPG despite being a very careful driver, typically 30-33. Drivers seat uncomfortable. Headlight direction my main worry. At night time on unlit country roads I have been known to lose the road on a righthanded bend, despite the headlight adjustment being on high. Also, the headlights when you are going downhill only shine a few white lines in front of youat best. Previous car Honda CRV, much better car overall then the Mazda.

I have the CX-5 as a work car. It was chosen by the previous manager, and it is crap! Issues: - seats are rubbish with minimal adjustment, no lumbar support, and uncomfortable for even medium journeys - i-Stop is annoying and has to be turned off every time you restart the car if you want it turned off. Over the year I have run this car, the speed it restarts at intersections has slowed down a lot. - climate control is useless. Constantly having to adjust temperature. Can't just leave it on a comfortable temperature (like 22 degrees C). It's never right. Also the vent locations are very limited and it's hard to get any fresh air on your face. - rear seats - leg room is not good. Middle seat is tiny even for a child - suspension makes clunky noises - AWD does nothing off road. Struggles when even one wheel loses traction - engine is powerful, but torque is rubbish if vehicle is loaded, and even worse if towing. Torque curve is too peaky and unusable. - auto wipers are pretty sporadic - auto lights don't turn on soon enough, even though I have set them to be sensitive - no RDS radio - TomTom GPS is junk. Has crapped out four or five times. Often has the vehicle on a totally different road, for many kms! - no roof rails make adding roof bars a pain - fuel economy is a joke. Nowhere near manufacturers claims. Much worse than other vehicles that it should be better than! Worst thing is the styling is hideous! Don't know how people think it is stylish!

Just before the 1st service was due the sat-nav started acting up. Constantly losing signal and having to recalculate, even showing your position on a totally different road to the one you are on. Then, after running a little low on diesel the check engine warning light came on, along with the master warning light, TPMS warning, SCBS warning and the Traction Control warning light. After refuelling the car all the lights went out with the exception of the check engine warning light. On the day of the service the light had gone out. Collected the car from service and no issues detected. Soon after the check engine warning light came on again. A quick check of the internet indicated that this is a common issue. After driving for 30 miles or so and a quick stop, restarting the engine and the light disappears. Decided to get it checked out anyway and I was informed that there were a few sensor issues and the engine software needs a quick update. Whilst waiting for the parts to come in (and still driving the car) all the previous warning lights have returned, in addition the i-stop function does not work and my gear indicator light is now not working. Spoke to the garage and they have told me NOT to drive the car until they have had a look at it.

Purchased the CX5 new as a company car. The test drive was excellent and overall the car was a joy to drive. After 14 months it developed a few faults, i.e. the seat dropped and 1st to 2nd was very notchy (40,000 miles). November 2014, I took the car into the local Mazda dealer that I bought it from and had serviced it from new, Oakmere Mazda, where they agreed to contact Mazda UK. There were several bulletins about the seat and gearbox, but the gear oil was a problem as it was on back order from the factory. April 2015 the gear oil arrived, 4 months, the car then went in for over a week, where the seat base was replaced and gearbox "repaired". Seat repair spot on, gearbox worse, now got stuck in reverse. Again, taken back to Oakmere Mazda for them to say that there was no fault - they should have been with me trying to make a quick 3 point turn. The mileage had now reached 57,000 miles, August 2015, when the car went in again for a gearbox repair. 5 weeks later I got it back and it didn't get stuck in reverse but 1st to 2nd still crunched. They now tell me it is out of warranty at 60,000.y Mazda UK and Oakmere Mazda of Northwich Cheshire, are, in my view, a total waste of space. I'm due to have it replaced at 90,000 and will obviously give Both Mazda and their dealerships a wide berth. Long live the New Tiguan.

I've owned this as my company car for just over 4 months now. This version falls into a lower tax band due to 119g/km CO2 emissions which is good to begin with, but overall I am very happy with my choice. I have actually been quite amazed with how many compliments this car receives, you don't see many of these on the roads which, based on how I rate this car, I am very surprised. I did look at the Qashqai, but this is a much more solid car. Engine: I previously had an Alfa Giulietta, so was a little concerned about losing power and having a bigger car, but the diesel engine is very good, low down torque is great and I haven't missed the Alfa's power too much. No issues with noise. The on-board computer registers close to 46mpg. Ride: very comfortable, as I have Sport Nav you get the full spec seats with lumbar support. Handling is great, one of the main reasons why I went for this car. I read on some reviews about the Sport Nav alloys giving too firm a ride, but I haven't noticed this, so not an issue and they look great. I've noticed the steering wheel is not correctly aligned with a slight bias to the right, so will get this looked at on the first service. Gearbox: a little bit notchy, the change from 2nd to 3rd is not as fluent as it could be, but you quickly get used to it. All the tech features work really well, sat nav is really good as is the handfree Bluetooth phone system. If I had to spend my own money I would definitely buy one of these, the car looks great, is good value for money and now I have one child, the boot space and the storage points inside the cabin are very handy indeed. I'd give this 4.5 out of 5, it just falls short of 5 based on the gearbox point I mentioned above, but this and the slight steering issue are the only problems I can highlight and they are slight ones at that, well done Mazda.

Love my car, this is my 4th Mazda. Moved up in size and now back to a diesel. However sat-nav has stopped linking into satellite. All I get is the connecting circle, but nothing else. I'm getting really fed up - I've been onto the dealer who told me to take the SD card out, wipe it and replace it. Done. Still nothing - a big 0. When I travel for work I have to use my iPad for Google Maps for directions as the sat nav doesn't work. Need advice how to get it back. Other than that, I love the car.

I upgraded my CX-5 AWD Sport diesel from a 2014 manual model to the new automatic model. Like others, I found the TomTom satnav installed to be problematic and nowhere near as good as a portable TomTom model that I'd previously owned. I presumed that with the hyped new communications system with larger screen etc. etc. that Mazda would have sorted the satnav problems. I could not have been more wrong. The satnav installed is by a company called Naviextras. Neither they nor Mazda have a version that can be updated by any operating system other than Microsoft PC. I have Apple Mac and no access to PC. My experience in attempting to sort the problem has been: The Manchester dealership I purchased from did not have a clue how to update, operate or obtain 'Live Services' on the car they'd sold me. Naviextras informed me, "These navigation devices are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) devices. Due to industry practices, the support for OEM devices is provided by the manufacturer of the product. As you bought an OEM device, please get in touch with Mazda regarding the updates." Mazda Customer Services informed me that there was no current support for Apple Mac on their Mazda Toolbox software, needed to update the satnav but that they would update the maps for me once and once only; so so much for the stated 3 years of free updates. I am so disgusted with the service and attitude of Mazda that, despite the vehicle otherwise being very good, I will never, ever purchase another car from Mazda.

Just coming up to 6 months old and over 5000 miles. Bought a petrol this time as mileage does not justify a diesel and did not want their Dual Mass flywheel and DPF problems. Short trips are at least 45 miles round trip and one of about 900 miles a month. After 4000 miles I zeroed the MPG indicator and am now registering 44.5 mpg which also manually calculates about the same on a fill up basis. Very Impressed with the low down torque of the petrol engine - at times it seems more like a diesel without the noise. This petrol engine is whisper quiet as are the 19" wheels. Reading other comments re noise I can only conclude Mazda must have changed the Toyo tyres on mine. North Yorkshire roads are a mix of atrocious to very smooth. Tyre wear at 5000 miles plus is negligible. Amazing how well and fast it corners with no body roll or noise (unlike a Honda CR-V I had 4 years ago.) It also takes speed bumps better than most. The i-Stop stopped working last week and nothing I did would restart it. 3 days on I had to stop very hard at a roundabout and guess what, the i-stop has worked since then. Seems like a component poor connection somewhere, I will point it out to York Mazda when it goes in for its first service and see if they are interested. I have found the gear change to be slightly 'clicky' and at times it baulks on a 2nd to 3 gear. It needs a gentle touch and all is well. I would not describe it as a silky MX5 type change however as many journalists do. The electric seats are disappointing as the passenger side is manual and the drivers does not have a memory function (although I understand this will happen later in 2014). The climate / air-con is disappointing in its lack of outlets in sensible places or a chilled glovebox. Some of the lower internal trim is too hard and marks too easily. Went for the optional lighter, perforated Ivory leather. It is very good and keeps the seats at a good temperature. Bought a full size 17-inch steel spare wheel for £122 delivered from Mytyres.co.uk a Sonar SX9 225/65 R17 102v it fits the car's tyre well OK. The replacement foam for around the tyre and the wheel clamp from www.Mazda-accessories.com for £101.94 delivered but you need to phone them and explain you already have the spare wheel etc and just need the rest of the kit - or you can buy the whole lot directly from them for about £300! I agree with others comments re the Infotainment controls (waste of time, I never use it - save money or spend it on what we want instead). Comments re the TomTom system are also valid and although its never let us down in the UK it lacks many desirable features of other sat navs and indeed the basic screen mounted, removable TomToms, which are much better. The cost of upgrading the software online is far too much. I only upgraded the Live function as its valuable in its camera, delay and rerouting options, but still too expensive. My previous car was a Skoda Superb Diesel 170 4x4 Elegance. It was amazing over the 3 years I had it - Mazda should look at one to see how things should be to perfection. Nothing missing and everything always worked, simply Superb. I changed due to mobility problems in getting out of a low down car. With the Mazda no mobility problems and can walk away after a long journey. Despite the few bits above we like the car very much and its the first large car/suv that my wife enjoys driving too. Hope we got a good one it certainly does everything we bought it for.

I love my car :-) although, I’d also love to know how the manufacturer achieved the quoted MPG, although, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as my driving is mainly on the motorways commuting to and from work. The engine is powerful and certainly gets you into those gaps when turning out on to a busy road, although, it does seem to fade as you increase speed, or is that me not wanting to thrash it cos it’s nice n shiny n new. It has a sporty feel to drive and holds the road extremely well considering it’s an SUV. The interior space is more than ample for a growing family with rear facing child seats and has a comfortable driving position; plus the rear seats folding configuration is so versatile i.e. either one seat or ¾’s can be laid flat from either side, which allows me to fit all my MTB stuff in the car without having to remove the child seat. I think you get a lot of car and a great driving experience for the money especially when you compare it to its rivals.

Highly recommend this car. Best car I've ever owned. Good looking, great road presence, comfortable, and great to drive. Just got 53mpg on last tankful (572 miles on one tank). Loads of room. Best SUV out there

This was possibly the most techy car I had ever owned, best gadget was the blind spot warning light on the mirror. Had this car from nearly new; it was a demonstrator with 2,000 miles on the clock. The oil pressure light started coming on at around 30k miles, it was taken to a dealership, the oil was changed and light reset. The light soon came back on and was again reset by Mazda at a service and safety recall visit. Eventually at 63,000 miles the car died, it turned out it was the engine earth strap – the original battery had leaked causing the strap to corrode. Then, after an MOT the oil pressure light came on again, so I had the oil pressure switch changed, but this did not resolve the issue. The the local Mazda dealership could not look at it for a month so it was taken to a local engine specialist whereby it was found that the turbocharger had failed, the camshaft was damaged as well as several other major parts resulting in a bill of over £8000 for a brand new engine from Mazda. I had a full Mazda service history but no goodwill was offered as I was 3,000 miles over warranty. So I have lost all faith in the car.

Absolutely wonderful car with a very high standard of customer service behind it. The Mazda CX5 I bought was the first of its kind and I fell in love with the way it commanded attention when driving it on the road. Everywhere we went the car made heads turn. I even came out of stores on many occasions to find a crowd looking at it. I was proud to show them the inside of my car and all it could do. The petrol consumption is very good The room in the back was amazing and so very comfy. The engine runs so quiet that i have got out of the car and wondered why it will not lock – to find that it was still running! the Sat Nav is easy to use and very good on the eye. To hook up your phone was a doddle and does it everytime you drive automatically. I have driven this car every day since Sept 2012 and has never let me down. 5 years and not one break down or part needed other than brakes and tyres. That is some car. Yes, I would definitely recommend this car. I see there is a new CX5 being launched and I can't wait to see what they have added as this car is near perfect.

We had numerous problems with our Mazda CX5. No hire car was provided following our recovery after rising engine oil levels leaving us without a car for 3 days. The rude staff from the Mazda dealership Mazda was unhelpful at the time. Mazda knew about a recall but were only actioning it following the problems being reported. We were charged for a replacement oil change during a service when the oil had been changed 6 weeks earlier due to the engine oil dilution problem. We had a total of 3 oil changes within 9 months / 8000 miles. We probed Mazda that the car wasn't fit for purpose while they did some investigation. We had a hire CX5 for 6 weeks while they examined our car. The outcome was they felt it had 2 faulty injectors which were replaced under warranty. We felt that our engine had been damaged by the persistently elevated oil level caused by diluted oil and because of this were worried we could expect major engine problems in the near future. To make what was a very stressful time harder was the way we were treated my the dealer. We were told by the dealer: 'it is to be expected' to have regular oil changes, and that the mileage we were covering was high (I disagree) and even that we were 'driving the car too hard', which we most certainly do not. This review could be a lot longer but my experience with this car was a nightmare, especially the customer service we experienced. It seems a car with design flaws in terms of the engine. We have since sold our Mazda CX-5.

I agree with many of the reviews on this website. Generally, apart from a few irritations, I really like the car. The engine is a cracker. One of the irritations is a noise from the clutch. Getting it to about 2000 revs and depressing the clutch, both stationary and in motion, produces a rubbing or squelching type of sound. I took it in to my local dealer who informed me that the diagnostics did not show anything wrong. I pointed out any driver could feel and hear the problem, and consequently I couldn't see how it had anything to do with diagnostics. They stood by their guns. Has any other owner/driver come across this problem?

I have a growing family that required a larger vehicle and chose the Mazda due to the advertised MPG and boot space. The car itself is fun to drive and has plenty of storage space. The published MPG though is impossible to get, even with all electrics turned off, whilst driving on a flat road with a featherweight foot on the accelerator.

I really liked the look and size of the vehicle, in addition I was impressed with the options/ packs I could have with it and the predicted MPG (I know these are never 100%). I enjoy driving the car, seat position and all the power the engine has but road noise is a slight problem which is overcome with the excellent Bose sound system. My main gripe has been the sat nav and Bluetooth problem issues I've had from 6 weeks after picking up the car from new. The car has been back and forth into the dealer on average every 2 months to try resolve the issues with the Bluetooth and sat nav. After several new software updates and finally installing a larger SD card, the problems seem to have been resolved but its been a month since so not holding my breath. MPG is not as great as I had hoped and only other issue I've had was a parking sensor failure, in all the dealership has dealt with all these issues at no cost to me so I am grateful for that.

We purchased this ex demo vehicle at a reasonable deal. Main requirement to provide capable and comfortable towing for our touring needs since retiring. After test driving and considering a range of five SUVs the CX5 came out top of our list but with a 6 month delivery time and the majority of used models being sports version (19" wheels even more noisier than the 17") we were fortunate to find the demo car. After getting used to the noisier, harsher ride to my previous Citroen C5 the CX5 has proved as tough and reliable as hoped with the pluses of an average mpg of 46, £30 tax and reasonable insurance. However, we could have done without the few annoying fault that have meant the car going back several times. i.e. engine fault light coming on and 2 local dealers unable to help due to not having the latest software program at the time! Rear bumper finisher strip being constantly kicked-off by rear tailgate operation (eventually discovered that bumper was incorrectly located following original dealers installation of tow bar). Unbearable rattling of dashboard in cold weather still persists even after several attempts by dealers to fix. Engine revving on start-up but only during hot weather! No dealer has an answer for this. Without these annoyances I would have rated the CX5 amongst the best in the price range.

Nice car to drive with plenty of torque. How Mazda claim the MPG is beyond me, I am averaging 33 mpg and that is taking it easy. The i-stop is a joke and as been back into Arnold Clark Liverpool on numerous occasions but they are useless and unable to fix it, I have now give up with it and accept this technology is not ready yet from Mazda. Bluetooth is sporadic, the same as the sat nav. The vehicle recently developed a knocking noise when on full lock, after yet another trip to the dealer they said it is the suspension mounts. They have had to order these and after 1 month we are still waiting for the parts, well done Mazda/Arnold Clark. Will be going back to Land Rover as previous car had less problems:)

Generally a nice car, good looking, well equipped according to the book and the MAZDA Care road side assistance was very quick when required. Now the bad bits: 3 tyres in 12 months (less than 7000 miles) and left stranded at the side of the road each time as the space saver kit is not to be recommended when sat on the motorway hard shoulder! and the tyres are only made by two companies so with such a monopoly the costs is high (higher than my other car (BMW 5). TOM TOM sat-nav - a complete waste of dash space. See the TOMTOM site for more details about the issues here - but please don't tell MAZDA because they don't want to hear about it! Ride quality - have your back surgeon on speed dial as you will need it if you decide to drive on anything less than perfect A road tarmac. This thing is stiffer sprung than an old club rally car I use to own! I would strongly recommend not choosing the 19 inch wheel version with low profile tyres unless you also by a whoopy cushion. Rude main dealer who refuses to admit there is a Sat nav issue despite printing off the TOM TOM forum listings and showing them to him. It is a real pity as this could be a really good car it just needs better tyres and better SAT NAV and I could then forgive it everything else including the poor MPG.

Most unreliable car I have ever had, from the day I got it I have had problems with an engine warning light coming on which results in an oil change each time. As of the 10/2/14 the car has been in the garage for 2 weeks having lost all power on a dual carriage way and no one seems to know what the problem is. Shame as it is a nice car when it drives

As a high mileage driver I chose the CX5 Sport nav model as it came pretty much with everything you would want however the most important feature for me was the Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to play an iPhone whilst making long journeys for business. Eight weeks into owning the vehicle i'm extremely disappointed to find that I cannot play the iPhone through the USB and now the Bluetooth has also stopped working so I cannot make hands-free calls or listen to any music from the iPhone. I have taken the vehicle to my local Mazda dealer in Basingstoke who were really unhelpful and told me that they did not know of any problems despite the problems being well documented on the Internet. No solution was offered and I had to ask for the telephone number for Mazda to speak with someone who could be more helpful and again they were not very helpful instead suggested I take it to another Mazda dealer some 20 miles from where I live. I'm now left with a vehicle which Is useless in terms of my business functions and feel completely let down by Mazdas lack of after-care.

Had car for 5 months (7000miles) and no problems so far. 3rd gear sometimes difficult. MPG a constant 43 to 45mpg whether driving local roads, 40 mile journeys on A roads to coast, or trips up motorways. Plenty of room in back for 6ft+ son. Really like this car but thought would get more like 50mpg

I am into my final six months of ownership out of thirty six and I can honestly say it is probably the best company car I have ever had! Its never let me down and it has a sporty ish drive with a great manual gearbox and light clutch. Good Points: Boot space, looks (soul red) fit and finish, lots of standard item which I now class as a must have; traffic on Sat Nav, adaptive headlights, key less start, reversing camera. Mpg ok but all manufactures fiddle the figures so 47-48 is fair for its size and the way I drive. Toyo Tyres are around £135 each had no problem in getting replacements and have lasted 22k on the front and 34k on the rear. Areas for improvement: Poor blue tooth interface which I believe has been upgraded on new model, keyless entry can also be slow. Local dealer could be better its not a pleasant experience due to it being shared with other manufacturers. Its been a great car and I will be sad to see it go although the boss (wife) says she may buy it off the lease company! What do I go for next? If the dealer can pull their finger out and find a demo CX5 AWD auto I may consider another. Fully loaded they are getting expensive though!

Nice car to drive, very comfortable, reliability has become an issue, today for the second time the car has had to be recovered to the local Mazda Garage, the problem is Oil Dilution, Mazda know about this issue and were supposed to have a fix, obviously does not work!, I've been driving for 30 years and never had a car that needed to go to the garage on the back of a recovery truck.

Very happy with the car, comfortable and fun to drive with loads of space. I went for the top spec Sport Nav so it came with all the goodies however DAB and a speed limiter are essential, which Mazda needs to add asap. Fuel consumption varies between 46-50mpg depending on how I drive. I expected mid 50s. Otherwise very happy!

I have the CX-5 as a company car. Overall its pretty good to drive however there are some faults. I have had an issue with the gearbox from new with constant grinding changing from 1st to 2nd gear. Been into the dealers twice and surprise surprise they cannot find the fault! Also the infotainment unit is a dog's dinner. No memory for phone numbers or song titles so every time you start the car it needs to download all your contacts rendering the phone useless on handsfree until its done so. Also using a usb stick for music has the same problem, until the music has downloaded to the unit nothing will play and then it always starts from track one. Very annoying as even stopping at a petrol station will cause everything to reload. Reported this problem to Mazda UK but they were not interested! Whoever designed the user interface on this unit should be sacked. Fuel consumption no where near what Mazda state. Overall not a bad car but poor customer service will mean a change of brand next time.
