Mercedes GLE SUV (2011-2018) - Practicality & boot space
The boot is big, but the Mercedes GLE doesn’t offer a seven seat option
As you’d expect from a large SUV, the GLE has a decent amount of space and storage areas on offer. Its boot is a good size and shape, but the hybrid model's batteries reduce luggage capacity a bit.
The doors open wide and the GLE doesn't seem too high when you're climbing in. Getting into the back might be more of an issue, though, due to the big wheelarches. The steering wheel is fully adjustable, as are the seats. The latter are also available with a memory function, which can save more than one drivers' preferred seating position.
Mercedes GLE interior space and storage
Inside, the GLE should be spacious enough for most passengers. The cabin is particularly light and airy when the optional panoramic sunroof is specified – and this doesn't eat into headroom as much as you might expect.
Rear legroom isn't quite enough to beat rivals, but it's not a noticeable difference and the GLE still provides enough space for adults and children in the back. The lack of a seven-seat option means the GLE lags behind the BMW X5 in terms of outright flexibility and practicality, though.
Like the old Mercedes ML-Class SUV, the GLE is chock-full of interior storage spaces. The massive glovebox can easily hold big bottles and the cup-holders can be heated and cooled as an option.
Boot space
The boot provides 690 litres of luggage space with all seats in place. The space is square, angular and free from too much wheelarch intrusion. There are hooks to hang shopping bags from so they don’t roll around when you’re driving and the load lip is completely flush with the boot opening, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble loading large items.
When the seats are folded flat, a maximum 2,010 litres of space is available. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats are easy to fold almost completely flat, too.
Towing
As you might expect from a large SUV, the Mercedes GLE-Class has impressive towing credentials and the 350d is capable of towing a braked trailer up to 3,500kg.
