The original Prius was launched in 1997 and since then it has proven itself to be very reliable. Some prospective buyers will be concerned about the lifespan of the car’s batteries, but they can take comfort in the fact that many original Prius models are still going strong.

The Toyota Prius came 16th out of the top 75 models in our 2020 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. Just 6.8% of owners told us their car had experienced a fault in the first year of ownership. Owners not only praised its quality and reliability, but also its low running costs and smooth engine.

Safety

As expected, the Prius was awarded the full five stars when it was crash-tested by Euro NCAP. The car was awarded a hugely impressive 92% for adult occupant protection and 82% for child occupant protection. Impressively, it also received 77% for pedestrian safety, thanks to its innovative pedestrian detection technology.

All models come with a raft of airbags and Toyota's new 'Safety Sense' active assistance technology bundle as standard. This includes pre-collision warning that can detect cars and pedestrians, autonomous emergency braking, a lane-departure warning system, road-sign recognition (which displays information scanned from traffic signs onto the digital display) and auto-dipping headlights, as well as adaptive cruise control.
