Volkswagen Eos cabriolet (2006-2011): owner reviews

"The Eos is engaging to drive, boasting handsome looks and a high quality interior. It's metal folding roof means it can be used all year round, but it's more expensive than rivals in this class."

My main gripe with Carbuyer review is over the size of the boot. The boot (with roof up) is ENORMOUS. The trick is to remove the drop down cover on which the retracted metal roof sits on. Obviously the roof cannot be retracted under this condition but for carrying large objects (oversize suitcases for example) there is ample room. Apart from that I confirm that the ride and feel of the car is solid to say the least due to its increased weight for strength. However, the performance is more than adequate in sport mode and mpg of 50+ is easy on long trips. Take up from rest in Drive mode has a delay and can be disconcerting when joining traffic at roundabouts for example. Finally, any squeaks from the roof components can be removed by applying the VW recommended silicone gel (very expensive) as per instructions. Bottle will last 2 years or so making the £40+ cost bearable.

Thought I had done thorough research before spending my hard earned money on this cabriolet but it was clearly too early and the same problems as everyone else has, had not reared their ugly heads. I love the car but it has been in the garage so many times for the leaking roof, I have lost count! I can just about live with the winter problems of not being able to open the doors and boot in the ice and snow but the leaking roof and the constant smell of damp in the boot has driven me to distraction. VW clearly know the problems and just keep trying to sort it out, but along comes the next shower of rain and the problem returns. Do yourself a favour and don't take a chance on this vehicle, you may get a good one but equally you take the chance of a leaky one! Lot of money to waste on bet!!!!

I wanted a good looking, quality, 4 seat coupe-cabriolet with strong performance, a refined engine and ride and an automatic gearbox. The eos has delivered on all these counts. Where it has failed (and this is a problem experienced by other eos owners) is in the design of its folding roof. It'sa brilliant concept, especially with the full width glass sunroof. But the car has been back to the dealer 6 times and it still isn't fixed. It leaks (although now only rarely) and it creaks and groans when i drive on rough roads. That said, i can live with its failings because in all other respects it's brilliant. I chose the car in preference to a bmw costing a lot more for the same performance (and which also has leak problems). I'm sure i made the right decision. Having owned 5 bmws, 3 audis and 3 vws, i can tell you that the vw build quality is as good as any - except for the folding roof!

Traded in a 2008 Audi TT 3.2 quattro and whilst I liked the power and road holding capabilities, I wish I'd gone for the Eos earlier. It's an absolute joy to drive - considerably better ride quality than the TT (on 18") and plenty of pull when overtaking - in fact I don't notice much difference in mid range acceleration. No roof issues but I am making a point of looking after it. The boot will still hold a large suitcase and standard size hand luggage with the roof down - I love this car!

The only issue has been the folding hard top - a common problem with the Eos. It has suffered from drips where the roof joins the offside A pillar and also some wind noise. But, after 10 visits to 2 franchised dealers, the problem is 99% solved (I've had 1 dripping episode in the last 12 months, on a day of very heavy rain) - which is good enough for me, given the car's other excellent qualities.

I was looking for a sleek, good looking, 4 adult sized seats coupe-cabriolet with a refined engine / ride and an automatic gearbox. The EOS certainly provided me with all of that plus more. Wicked looks, black exterior with cream leather interior, when the roof is down, heads turn! I love my EOS! HOWEVER, what lets it down badly (and this is a problem experienced I'm informed by other EOS owners) is in the design of its folding roof. It's a brilliant concept, especially with the full width glass sunroof. But my car has been back to the dealer 5 times where the folding roof has failed to deliver. Very frustrating indeed! Also I have had water leaks on many occasions, both in the cabin and boot. The seals have been replaced three times. It leaks rarely now - touch wood!)It also seems to groan quite a bit when riding over rough roads! In severe temperatures (winter), the boot freezes solid so it cannot be opened. Sometimes the doors, and windows get stuck also. BUT I still own the car because I love it, performance, build quality and engine reliability is awesome! VW are aware that there are some flaws with the model I have, but on saying that which car on the road does NOT have any flaws? Compared to the other cabriolets on the road, the EOS is the business!

The eos is a great car but it has design flaws: the windows can freeze solid in winter and so can the boot making it almost imposible to get in. The rear windscreen angle is too flat for water to run off properly but there is no way a wiper can be fitted given the convertible roof. This is a really good convertible - but hopefully vw will learn and the next generation car will be perfect

The eos is a really good mix of convertible, sportscar and family car. It feels fast and stable, but fun with the roof down. Some design issues: when you open the doors water sometimes falls into the car, the same fault with the boot, but the water falls directly onto the electric system, that part isn't good. Learning how to take the roof down took longer than expected because it isn't intuitive enough, no discernible logic. Boot is much larger than expected and sitting in the back isn't too bad. I just enjoy this car a lot. Wasn't good in the snow though.

I bought my car from a main Toyota dealer (in Isle of Man) (not the VW dealer) it was obviously a trade in. It had a 12 month warranty (not optional) reasonably low mileage and appeared to be in good condition generally. I'm a single parent and believe it or not had saved up for 10 yrs to replace my very old ( very reliable and practical) small Nissan. I wanted to upgrade to reliability but with a "wow" factor having waited 10 yrs - and had planned to keep this (new to me) replacement Car for several years. Having owned this model of VW for just under 2yrs my advice would be do not buy an EOS. And certainly don't buy it :- A) just because it looks good (which it does) b) if you don't have a garage to keep it in (out of the wet weather) c) if you live somewhere that's got a high percentage of rainfall d) if you don't have a bottomless pit of money to replace v.expensive VW parts Shortly after I bought this car I discovered it had a leak in the boot - I went back to the dealer (who sold it) thinking the warranty would cover the problem . Not so, the Warranty did not cover water ingress!! Wonder why!! So now the steep learning curve begins - I could see why this car might leak water due to the number of moving roof parts and rubber seals but I wasn't informed that as it was my boot that had a leak replacing the boot seal at a cost of £80 would be the solution. At the time this leak didn't seem too bad (just a bit of damp mat) and as the car was purchased in August in good weather it dried out quickly. Next problem was the roof got stuck opening half way. Luckily it closed again so I was able to drive to a Garage that specialises in German Cars. Next day I went back and the guy there told me it was working fine and it must have been a "blip" - sometimes apparently the computer gets confused if the order of signals to open the roof gets out sequence?! Anyway it worked okay for a while. Next problem was after huge amounts of rainfall this year Jan - April. Leak in boot "big time" - now awash with water. Due to the water ingress the hydraulic motor that drives the roof mechanism now has an electrical fault (£900 to replace it) plus labour - and of course the roof won't open. I had no idea that the components that operate the roof are all located in the boot space! (why would I know this? I'm not a mechanic) nobody mentioned this at any point. I have been told too late that people who do know about this problem wrap the said parts in plastic bags to try and keep them dry. The diagnosis has taken over a week (but this was because my garage was being thorough and trying to make sure that the hydraulic motor was truly the culprit) While we wait for a new part (another week) I can't drive the car because the warning "ding" is constantly on (can't put up with that). Meantime I have missed all the recent warm sunny weather - so no point in having a cabriolet. This experience has put me off this car and I thought that VW had an impeccable reputation for engineering - but not when it comes to cabriolets and British weather. No doubt the Californians love it! If you are considering an EOS .........Buyer Beware! This is a car for enthusiasts (who would know about the hydraulic motor's location - and all the leaking seals problems etc) and/or for people who have a surplus of cash so it just doesn't matter how many times it's got a fault. It's such a pity that VW didn't get this leaking seals stuff sorted out - the car is a great car to drive - but so far I haven't had the roof open in good weather at all this year - and thats a limited "window of opportunity".

Great fun, but the seals on the frame-less door windows 'creak' with body shake, and tend to drop water into the car. The windows also give some problems during very cold weather when they don't 'drop' when unlocking the car, and once inside, also fail to 'lift' until the car has warmed up. The price one pays for getting a hard top convertible.

The car is great, however it is let down by persistent leaks in the roof, rattles from the roof mechanism and badly corroding brake discs all of which the manufacturer has failed to rectify. I found it particularly annoying this winter when i could not open the door due to the window being frozen solid. When ulocking the doors the window drops to clear the top seal to allow you to open the door but because it was frozen it would not drop and prevented me from getting in to start the engine to deice the screen etc.

The car is a convertable that i think is great. The repair issue relates to leaking door seals which the garage has worked hard to correct under warrenty - but not 100% sucsessful

Terrific car. Although it's a convertible there's very little compromise in terms of luggage and passenger space. Roof up it performs just like any other coupe, roof down adds a new dimension to car ownership.

Love the car. Service costs a little high. One long lived electrical problem now finally fixed- otherwise very good.

1st class 4 seater cabriolet that has the volkswagon assurance of trouble free motoring, that provides the peace of mind to enjoy yourself to the full with the roof both up or down. it certainly provides the feel good factor that always materilises as a big broad beaming grin.

The eos is a wonderful concept (as a cc), but in terms of how the car carries the mechanism for the roof, it could all be dampened better, and really the 'sport' version also needs tightening up and all the rattles and sheakes eliminated. This is what it has spent time in the workshop for. Nevertheless a good car, and able to put a very wide grin on your face!
