Excellent acceleration with the 4 wheel drive and good cornering too. The dsg set up is annoying tho. I think it has two clutches and if you try to pull away quickly having just put it into drive it has a tendency to sort of hiccup as it tries to engage both clutches. I don't like the auto rain sensors either as they either don't sense anything and let your windscreen fill up with splashes or one drop hits in just the right place and they sense 'downpour' and go mental. Leather seats and seat heaters are nice, boot space is ok and air con is good. It does a good job on b-roads and motorways especially overtaking but round town its kind of annoying unless you floor it everywhere. I drive like this so i like it.
Over all. Good but don't get Dsg or rain sensors

I have driven just over 12000 miles and have had the car just 2000 miles when I bought it. I had a Skoda VRS 2011 model which got traded in for the Golf, and as most people know, the VRS is a cracking car. Also had a type R another cracking car. I got the Golf R because I was sick of front wheel drive cars spinning up in the wet, losing traction and suffering from under steer.
Well the Golf R is a dream, no matter how wet, it will not lose traction of the line, and grips the road supremely. A very practicable car, easy to live with as a daily driver and for the performance is very economical. Build quality is excellent, superb seats, packed full of everything you need and if not you can add it. Now it gets a hammering because of the cost, but lets get real here, this is a high performance motor with some of the best technology in the world, a highly tuned engine and superb suspension that would cost well in excess of 10k if you tried turning the GTI into an R; oh and let's not forget the superb transmission, 4 wheel drive when required.
It is without doubt an excellent car and I am a very happy owner. I understand those that feel it is a complete waste, but that's only because it is an expensive purchase, and most people can't afford it, or the kids and the pram won't fit in. But for those that feel that way, you know that if you could you certainly would :-)

I have owned Golf's for over 10 years (MK4 V5, MK4 GTI) and now a MK5 R32. I could not bring myself to get the MK6 R because the 3.2 V6 sound and feel is absolutely superb. I have owned the car for 4 years and without exaggeration i drive drive the car every day, and I still look forward to every journey.
The MK5 build quality is excellent, 6-7 years old and still tight as a drum, no rattles or squeaks. I service the car once a year and it has never been to the garage other than that.
The Golf really is one of those cars that lives up to the hype, and is the car to be beaten by other manufacturers.
I am sad as my growing family means the R32 will have to go next year, the only reason I havent upgraded already is becuase there is nothing out there that will match the true all rounded capability of my golf.
