New Subaru Solterra brings more range, power and polish
Subaru’s electric SUV gains major upgrades – and it’s expected to come to the UK later this year

- New battery and better efficiency for 25% range boost
- Powerful 338bhp XT version
- Larger 14-inch touchscreen
Subaru has revealed a heavily updated version of its all-electric Solterra SUV, with improvements across the board. The revised 2026 model brings a fresh look, a more powerful range-topping trim, and a host of upgrades aimed at boosting both range and refinement. While UK-specific details are still under wraps, it’s likely the updates shown at the New York Motor Show will carry over when the car arrives here.
The most headline-grabbing change is a 25% increase in range. In the US, that now equates to around 285 miles from a slightly larger 75kWh battery. It’s worth noting that the current UK model is rated at 289 miles on the more optimistic WLTP cycle, so we can expect a similar – if not slightly improved – figure when the new version lands.
Subaru has also introduced a new XT version of the Solterra. This flagship trim features a more powerful dual-motor setup producing 338bhp – up from the 233bhp of the regular all-wheel-drive version. That gives it enough shove to sprint from 0-62mph in “under five seconds”, making it the first genuinely quick version of the Solterra.

Sharper to drive and to look at
Both powertrains now benefit from updated motor controllers that improve power delivery and traction, while Subaru says tweaks to the chassis, suspension and electric power steering have also made the Solterra more agile and responsive, without compromising its off-road credentials. Ground clearance remains an SUV-worthy 211mm, placing it among the best in class for traversing rough tracks or fields.
Visually, the 2026 Solterra has been given a more upmarket makeover. The front end has been smoothed out, ditching the old black grille panel in favour of a slimmer black bridge between redesigned headlights. New bumper styling, a simplified lighting signature, and the option of body-coloured bumpers on some trims help it stand apart more clearly from its Toyota bZ4X sister model. There’s also a choice of 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels and fresh two-tone paint options.
Interior gets a tech-focused refresh
The cabin sees some thoughtful revisions, too. The dashboard has been reshaped to improve visibility and space, while a new 14-inch central touchscreen replaces the old infotainment setup. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now included, alongside wireless smartphone charging and a smattering of USB-C ports for passengers.
Subaru’s suite of driver-assistance tech is also included as standard. That means adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and a full 360-degree camera system – plus a new Emergency Stop Assist function.
When will the new Solterra arrive in the UK and how much will it cost?
Subaru hasn’t yet confirmed exact launch dates or pricing for the UK, but with the current model priced from just over £50,000, we expect a slight repositioning. The regular model could drop slightly in price, with the high-performance XT sitting further up the range. Either way, the updated Solterra is a key part of Subaru’s EV expansion, with more electric models expected to follow including a larger Subaru Trailseeker SUV.
