Comfortable, well-equipped car that does everything well. Engine and gearbox provide plenty of power and torque, which makes driving very easy both in town and on motorways. Handling is firm enough for country roads but comfortable. The dash is well laid out with touchscreen media, sat nav and bluetooth. The orange backlighting to buttons might not be to everyone's taste compared to VW blue/white, and the touch screen isn't the sharpest resolution, but it's a well-equipped car. Previous Avensis was extremely reliable and this one has proved the same thus far. Toyota garages are caring and provide excellent service, so despite the auto press giving negative reviews about this car it is an excellent and good value family estate!

A smooth quiet ride. Seems well built and reliable like most Toyotas. Good for everyday commuting. Some problems with a weird clicking noise in the rear that so far two Toyota dealers have not been able to locate and correct.

Had one as a company car, until it was taken off me after I exceeded the lease mileage by 50k. After 125k miles all it needed was tyres and two headlight bulbs. The 10k service interval was a bit of a bind, got to know my dealer very well "You were only just here, weren't you?" Not the most exciting thing to drive, but when you've done 8 hours work after a 4 hour drive with 4 hours home it was a painless trouble free drive.

I am using it for private hire but fuel economy is never more than 45mpg and the ride is terrible. The engine is noisy and there is a lot of creaking and rattles from inside. Mine has a massive sunroof and the rear floor is flat for middle passenger. May go for a Prius next because the ride is terrible and never settles .

Bought this car as a taxi 5 years ago and have just hit 220,000 miles. This car has been excellent — reliability second to none. The only parts I have had to replace are two CV joints, a wheel bearing, a radiator hose and radiator along with normal servicing parts. As a taxi you would expect to signs of wear but the interior and exterior have coped very well and are like new. I get positive feedback all the time from customers on how nice a ride it is and how spacious the car is. I regularly average 43mpg on local runs and up to 58mpg on long runs. I felt that after five years and 220,000 miles of happy motoring on the same clutch this car deserved a mention. When I change my car is will be buying another Toyota Avensis.

A large diesel estate isn't ever going to be the most exciting car in the world, but if you're after something spacious, reliable and economical this could be the car for you. Not exactly the quickest off the mark but in gear acceleration is good - especially on motorway trips. It's also good on fuel - on a brim to brim test of over 300 miles of mixed driving it returned just over 40MPG. The only problems I have had with it are that is doesn't like cold starts (not sure if that is just mine or if it is a problem in general for diesel Toyotas) and it has quite a poor turning circle. This coupled with the long length can make tight turns a bit tricky! Other than that, I would recommend this car.

A good solid dependable car. Running costs are low, fuel consumption not bad (given petrol auto used mainly in town). Very comfortable on long runs (quiet and economical). It's not the sportiest car, but given space, quality and reliability it is hard to beat for the price, especially if you buy nearly new as I did.

This vehicle is proving to be a low maintenance, reliable family car. The second hand cost are not significantly higher than other makes but you get top build quality. This makes it the thinking man’s family car. In short you get great value for your money with low ownership cost if regularly serviced due to high reliability. On the down side the 2.0 Petrol only gives me 32 mpg around town and it’s never going to be a stand out good looking car.

This car is well built, spacious and stylish and superior in build quality to an equivalent BMW. The ride and handling are excellent and the comfort factor similar to a high spec Saab 9-5. The steering is well balanced and precise. The 2.2 TD is much better than the 1.6 and 2.0 litre units both of which feel a little underpowered. Power delivery is smooth and progressive with no flat spots. The auto box is accomplished and similar to the smooth delivery of Saab auto transmissions but without the slight delay in take up those units experienced. Ride comfort is unrivalled in this class and exceeds that of the BMW 5 and 3 series probably because the BMWs are supplied with run flat tyres. The ride is also smoother than the mercedes E class. The VW Passat is in all respects a lesser vehicle than this model, whilst the Hyundai i40 feels poorly engineered by comparison.

I've previously owned over the past 30 years, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, VW, Volvo and Saab - and this is my first Toyota. The Avensis engine and auto box is smooth, quiet and the build of the car is by and large excellent, comparable to many of the prestige marques. It's a big estate and does things as you'd expect it to do. The reputation of Toyota speaks for itself and is across the range a far more reliable marque than the more expensive prestige badges. To sum up; A very underrated car that is amongst the very best when it comes to reliability, safety, build quality and running costs. Having finally owned a Toyota, I can see why people buy them - they're simply, quietly brilliant.

I bought this car after owning a 2008 Yaris which was brilliant, fun, reliable and economical. The Avensis has turned out to be the exact opposite. At first glance the build quality looks good. However any appearance of quality on the exterior is quickly eroded after taking a closer look. Any plastic parts on the outside of the car are extremely flimsy. Indeed the plastic lugs on the roof where a roof rack can be fitted have all come out whilst driving leaving holes for water to get in. None of these were ever touched by me. They just fell out with no persuasion whatsoever. If you want to replace them Toyota charge £15 each. This is a total rip off considering there is more plastic in a kinder egg. The bumpers flex when touched with one finger. Something I'd expect to find on a cheap Citroen not a Toyota. The interior is not much better. It's all black in my version, not interesting in the slightest and seems to be made of recycled black bin liners. Even worse, once cleaned the top of the dashboard becomes so shiny it reflects light off the windscreen making it hard to see out on sunny days. The glovebox catch has worn out and randomly falls open. The plastic hooks that hold the carpets in place are all missing or broken. The seals around the headlights and tail lights are already letting in water as are the seals around the indicators on the wing mirrors. The fuel filler panel randomly decides to open when vehicle is in motion. This car seems prone to getting punctures as I've had more in this car than all my other cars combined. Finally the most alarming fault is the brakes. The electronic handbrake doesn't release properly and leaves the back brakes on whilst driving. This wears out brake pads and damages the pistons in the brake calipers. Toyota have told me I need to replace the calipers, discs and pads at my own cost despite the car being under warranty and Toyota admitting the problem was not my fault. Apparently they call this 'wear and tear' even if it's been caused by a fault with the electronic handbrake. The cost of the repair was quoted at just under a grand. Not acceptable for a 4 year old car with a year's warranty left. Driving the car isn't too bad. It's boring but it's comfortable. It's definitely at its best on the motorway and makes for a smooth cruiser even on rough roads. However on country lanes it doesn't fair so well. It has a habit of understeering after initially seeming to grip. The traction control system is very invasive and quite often activates for no real reason. I also keep getting the warning 'check vsc system' and the abs waring light keeps coming on randomly. Toyota say they can't find anything wrong. Front windows kept fusing. This is the most unreliable, boring and tacky Toyota on sale. Steer well clear

In one word: disappointing. Bought the car with 14K on the clock and have put another 30K on it. So far I've had the auxiliary drive belt replaced twice due to slippage and a window switch replaced. There have been constant trim rattles from the RH air vent, the trim below it and the passenger side head rest. The car has more road noise than the competition although a change from stock tyres has made a big difference, there's also fair bit of engine noise at low speeds. Other things that the designers should have given more thought to: Auto headlights tend do not come on in heavy rain, unlike my previous Ford and Vauxhall. When the headlights are on in daylight, sat nav goes into night mode and is difficult to see - switching to day mode requires navigating the set up. The radio doesn't have a one-touch button to cancel a traffic announcement. Electric parking brake is poorly located at a reach and there's no hill-start assist so you need to balance the foot brake, clutch and throttle when pulling away. On a plus it's well-specified for the money, very economical (I've seen 67 mpg on a motorway run), comfortable, has great load carrying capacity with the seats folded and is at home on long runs where it's reasonably quiet. I also think it looks good. Toyota's reputation for reliability seems something of days long since gone. If you want a cheap motorway cruiser then this may be it, if you want quality or something that's not going to see much of the motorway look elsewhere.
