Inside, the Touran has been subtly updated in similar fashion to the exterior and there's a modern, intuitive infotainment system, with the option of full smartphone connectivity on most models. The seats are plush and comfortable and feature optional lumbar support for the first time, which really makes a difference on long journeys. There's even a massage function on some models.

Volkswagens aren't generally known for eye-catching interiors, but the Touran's is nice enough, with lighter-coloured highlights serving to break up the grey materials and an angular, driver-focused design to the dashboard. As always with VW, build quality, fit and finish feel top-notch – the Touran really feels like a premium product and should stand up to years of family motoring well.
There are simple controls on the steering wheel allowing you to carry out a number of functions without reaching over to the dashboard, while we found both the on-board infotainment system and dashboard button controls easy to use, too. Plenty of adjustment in the driver's seat and steering wheel means finding a comfortable driving position is straightforward.
Equipment
There are four Volkswagen Touran trim levels: SE, SE Family, SEL and range-topping R-Line. The SEL and R-Line models make life as comfortable as possible for all occupants by adding three-zone climate control, sat nav and extra rails and nets to help secure loose luggage in the boot. SE Family models also get a panoramic sunroof and a voice amplification feature for the driver.
All models get three rows of seats (seven chairs in total), automatic post-collision braking, seven airbags, air-conditioning and roof rails. All have a touchscreen infotainment system, with SEL and R-Line getting the option of MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality to integrate your smartphone with the car.
Options
There are a host of options available, including something called 'Cam Connect' and a voice amplification system. Cam Connect allows you to fit a GoPro video camera (which must be purchased separately) facing the rear seats, letting you see what's going on in the back without having to turn your head. The voice amplification lets your voice travel around the car without the need to shout – ideal for safely correcting unruly kids while on the move.
