"The Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer is a comfortable, spacious and efficient car that proves you don’t need an SUV for family life"

Pros

  • Economical diesel engines
  • Plenty of equipment
  • High-quality interior

Cons

  • Rear seats are a bit tight
  • Too many buttons on steering wheel
  • Not as much fun to drive as a Ford S-MAX

The Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer is a seven-seat MPV that used to be called the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso. While most car makers have ditched MPVs in favour of high-riding SUVs because buyers prefer the styling, MPVs like this often make a more pragmatic and sensible choice for families.

Its rivals include the Ford S-MAX and Renault Grand Scenic but there aren’t too many others these days. It’s a shame because MPVs are, on the whole, more spacious, easier to get into and more efficient than a similarly priced seven-seater SUV.

The interior is fantastic, with a 12-inch digital information display where the dials would be behind the wheel, plus another seven-inch touchscreen on the dash for radio and sat nav. The materials inside are good quality and look smart, so the interior is a great place in which to spend time. Models with the large sunroof feel extra airy inside but all versions are spacious.

The seating arrangement ensures comfort all round. There’s loads of space in the front rows, plus Isofix child seat fixings. The third row offers a pair of small seats that adults can fit into in a pinch but are designed primarily to accommodate children.

There are two engines: a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol and a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel. The former is good for shorter, more local trips and the latter works best if you do a lot of motorway miles, as it’s more economical at speed. Both come with either a manual or automatic gearbox.

The Grand C4 SpaceTourer is available in Life, Sense and Shine trim levels. The entry-level Life model has alloy wheels, cruise control, air-conditioning, front fog lights, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, rear parking sensors, a 12-inch digital dial display and Citroen Connect Nav on a seven-inch central screen.

Upgrading to Sense adds larger alloy wheels, tinted windows, front parking sensors, half leather seats, keyless go and a rear parking camera. The range-topping Shine model has Xenon headlights with intelligent beam, active lane departure warning and active cruise control. As well as this, a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate and blind-spot monitoring are standard on the Shine model.

Owner satisfaction with the C4 SpaceTourer varies – the five-seat model finished in a mediocre 47th place out of 100 cars in our 2019 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, and Citroen didn't perform well as a brand in the more recent 2021 survey. However, it was the best rated MPV for owner satisfaction with a score of 90.7% for both comfort and innovative safety features. It was also rated our best large MPV for 2019.

Euro NCAP has only crash-tested the five-seat Citroen C4 SpaceTourer, it says it’s satisfied the Grand C4 SpaceTourer would achieve the same five-star result as its smaller sibling.
