New IM L6 is the latest premium electric saloon to take on Tesla
Chinese manufacturer is confirmed to be coming to the UK with its all-new electric saloon
- Possible range of 500 miles
- Could start from £40k
- Coming to the UK in 2025
Buyers of electric saloon cars will have one more manufacturer to consider in 2025, as IM Motors is the latest car maker to throw its hat in the ring with the IM L6. In a similar fashion to the relationship between Toyota and Lexus, the brand will enter Europe positioned as the premium sibling to MG, as both fall under the ownership of Chinese parent-company SAIC.
IM Motors – those initials standing for ‘Intelligent Mobility’ – has been producing electric cars since 2021 and currently sells the L7 saloon alongside the LS6 and LS7 SUV overseas. UK customers will get the slightly smaller L6 saloon – designed as a rival to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 – and the LS6 SUV that’s based on the same platform.
What do I need to know about the IM L6?
IM Motors claims that the L6 will offer market-leading performance when it arrives next year. Although specifics are still under wraps, a 0-62mph time of under three seconds has been suggested, most likely achieved using two motors and four-wheel drive.
Entry level cars will arrive with a 75kWh battery that should provide over 372 miles of range. A larger 100kWh battery is also promised, using ‘solid-state’ battery technology that is yet to find its way into a production road car. If this battery does reach production, IM Motors suggests that a 497-mile range could be possible in the L6. Both batteries will support 300kW rapid-charging, making them capable of some of the fastest charging speeds on the market.
Externally, the L6 has a sleek body with flush door handles and a coupe-esque sloping roofline. The lights appear to be LED units both front and rear, but official specs and technology information hasn’t yet been revealed. If the interior of the LS6 SUV is anything to go by, then the L6 will receive a large infotainment screen and a digital driver’s display along with another screen used for climate control.
How much will the IM L6 cost?
There’s no official UK IM L6 pricing information yet, but as IM has confirmed the Tesla Model 3 to be a key rival for the L6, we wouldn’t be surprised if prices started at a similar level – around £40,000.
