Fiat Grande Panda review - MPG, running costs & CO2 emissions

The Fiat Grande Panda may look a bit like the original from the 1980s on the outside, but underneath it features modern EV and mild-hybrid technology to make it efficient and keep CO2 emissions low. No matter which version you go for, it’s cheap to buy in the first place, too.

While it may be badged as ‘Hybrid’, the entry-level Grande Panda actually gets more of a mild-hybrid setup, so don’t expect to be able to do any electric-only range in this model. It’s efficient, though, with fuel economy in the low 50mpgs.

The Fiat Grande Panda Electric is still pretty cheap to buy and could be the answer if you want to make the switch to an EV. If you have a home wallbox charger you’ll save lots of money by charging at home. If you do need to charge out and about, the Grande Panda Electric is capable of charging speeds of 100kW, meaning a top-up from 20-80% could take just 33 minutes.

How efficient is the Fiat Grande Panda in the real world?

When we tested it in wintry weather, the Grande Panda was on track to achieving around 145 miles from a charge on routes which included a mix between city and country roads as well as some time on the motorway. That’s quite a way below the quoted 199-mile figure, but if you’re sticking to lower-speed around-town driving where EVs tend to do best, you’re likely to achieve a much better range. In warmer weather this is also likely to improve.

How much will the Fiat Grande Panda cost in tax?

At present, EVs are exempt from VED (road tax), but not for long – from April 2025 the Grande Panda Electric will also be liable to pay this tax. The mild-hybrid version is liable for the standard rate of road tax.
