Honda Civic hatchback (2015-2022) - MPG, running costs & CO2

The Honda Civic petrol engines are efficient and peppy, but the loss of the diesel engine means high-mileage drivers should look elsewhere

The Civic’s two turbocharged petrol engines provide decent economy and emit relatively low amounts of carbon dioxide. These were joined by a turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel engine that offered low fuel consumption and emissions, but it’s no longer available brand-new. The 1.0-litre petrol is our pick of the line-up anyway, and Honda is moving towards hybrid power.

Honda Civic MPG & CO2

Most buyers are expected to choose the three-cylinder turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine and this officially manages up to 47.9mpg with a six-speed manual or 46.3mpg if you choose the seven-speed CVT automatic gearbox. Do note the Civic’s fuel consumption is trim-sensitive, though, and on higher models it drops to around 45mpg due to wider wheels and tyres. CO2 emissions range from 134 to 152g/km with the 1.0-litre engine, meaning company-car users will be liable for reasonably low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rates as long as they spec a lower trim level model. All Civics cost the standard rate for VED (tax).

Upgrade to the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and the Civic’s fuel consumption doesn't fall as much as you'd expect. Pairing this engine with the manual gearbox sees economy of 46.3mpg, while the optional CVT automatic cuts it to 42.8mpg. CO2 emissions for the 1.5-litre engine are either 137 or 150g/km, placing it in the higher BiK company-car tax bands.

Insurance

Owing to its potent entry-level 1.0-litre petrol engine, the latest Civic sits in insurance groups 15 to 22 out of 50, so should cost roughly the same as the equivalent Golf and Focus to insure.

Warranty

The latest Civic comes with a three-year/90,000-mile warranty and you can extend this for one, two or three years at a respective cost of around £500, £900 or £1,000. We’d say it’s about time Honda threw in an extra year or two as standard though, as Kia, Fiat, Toyota and Hyundai all give longer guarantees.

Servicing

Honda’s fixed-price packages are reasonably priced and range from £250-350 depending on the maintenance required.
