Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (2016-2022) - Practicality & boot space

The Hyundai Ioniq is fractionally longer than a Ford Focus hatchback, but around the same width. There’s enough space inside for six-footers to sit behind each other, although as is common, the middle passenger in the rear will have less space than the others because of a smaller seat and the transmission tunnel.

Rear passenger space in the Ioniq isn’t as generous as in a Nissan Leaf, while the gradually sloping roofline and the position of the batteries underneath the rear bench mean anyone approaching six feet tall will feel their head brushing against the roof lining. Legroom is fine but not outstanding, which is perhaps to be expected given the Ioniq isn't a particularly large car.

Interior storage is reasonable, with big door bins each side, a phone tray in front of the gear lever and stowage nets on the front seatbacks.

Boot space

Hyundai says the Ioniq has best-in-class boot space, thanks to the location of the batteries under the seats in the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. The Hybrid model boasts an impressive 443 litres of boot space – considerably more than both the all-electric Ioniq and the hybrid's main rival, the Toyota Prius. Because it doesn’t require home charging, you don’t have to worry about a charging cable taking up space in the boot or garage.

Towing

Like many hybrids and EVs, the Ioniq isn’t deemed suitable for towing at all, so if you need to pull a trailer or small caravan, you’ll unfortunately have to look elsewhere.
